Hi,
Ok.. I have been hacking away on my GenToo box now for about 4 days...
Just received a new Cable TV setop box... with firewire...
I have now connected to my Mythtv backend... not configured yet..
I am downloading the lastest release R5A15.1 now...
Shall I expect to have issues with building this machine? with Knoppmyth that is?
Computer specs:
2.5Ghz P4 Celeron
512MB ram
30 GB boot and software ATA 133 hda
300 GB SATA /mnt/store drive
Soyo Dragon Ultra Platinmum MB
FX5200
55" WS55711 HDTV
Any advice?
Tim.. {a linuxgeek}

well firewire support is far from "out of the box" at this point, but I have heard some success stories so it should be doable.

Well I installed it quite pain-lessly.. {aside from needing a
ps2 keyboard to answer the few questions in the beginning
of auto-install}
Went through the setup... I installed one of PVR-500 {selected
pvr-250/350 as it was my only choice for the MPEG} was not
sure how to setup FW = Fire Wire so I added 2 on different
ports. and added the DVB {pcHDTV 3000}... did the mythfill...
Reboot one more time.. got X configured with my FX5200...
All is well..
Booted - Mythfrontend started... I pressed watch tv.. Wola!!!
Snow!!!... pressed C change tuner.. same thing.. pressed Y to
change cards ditto, pressed y again.. Bam.. HDTV woot... finally
got to see what that looks like... {had the card a couple of months
now}
I pressed Y again... back to the snowy ones.. then.. it rebooted....
corrupted my hd and I had to do it all over again... I kept getting
a Kernel panic.. couldn't mount the FS.. yada yada..
So luckily the beginning is a breeze to do...
Now I am back to where I was...
At this time all I have working is the pcHDTV card... Hope to
get the FW working tonight...
Where shall I start with my White Box PVR-500's no worky...
Should I follow the 150 wiki or is there one for 500's...
Any info would be great...
btw: the pcHDTV 3000 did work out-of-box... nice work everyone!!!
This was so much faster.... I love this KnoppMyth... though I do
Love Gentoo... I need to get a crash course on Debian and/or Knoppix...
Thanks,
Tim

well the 150 wiki would be a good starting point. and search the forums here about the 150 and 500's. the problem is going to be a combination of ivtv driver version firmware version, and tuner setting. I don't think anyone has come up with the magic dust that works for everyone everytime, but shouldn't be to difficult to start swapping things out, by following that wiki page and the various success stories on this forum. I think there are some recounts of very nearly getting firewire to work around the forums as well.
oh and as for debian vs gento apt-get = emerge without the wait.

Ok now I am frustrated..
Whats with Knoppmyth not being able to handle a system reboot
{even one that was unexpected}... I have now built my machine
three times because - the ivtv drivers are doing some sort of no no
and causing kernel panic and reboot.... {that is my guess}
My boot partition seems to get corrupted and fsck does not fix
a damn thing.. so I am hosed...
I spent a lot of time last night configuring various things...
The default/first tuner is my pcHDTV.. I was able to watch
it for 10 mins or so.. no issues whatsoever...
Then I tried to watch tv one of the pvr-500's first I received
a grey screen Card 1 tuner 0.. then a little snow... then
reboot... System crash....
What a pain...
Is Knoppmyth RA5.15.1 that unstable that it cannot handle any
unexpected system reboots... UGH!!!
I am wondering if I should even continue with this... I want to
continue forward... I never had a system reboot with Gentoo.
even with countless trials with ivtv drivers...
Any ideas... anything I can do...
I cannot feel any confidence in this... Perhaps... there is something
that can be done....
I would like to continue with using Knoppmyth.. The idea is awesome
and debian is simple... though apt-get is quick it is a bit tempermental...
like fails to update package info if a source is down... it bails with errors.
Any advice... I do not want to have to rebuild again... {after this time that is}
Oh one more question...
Maybe this is why I am rebooting {maybe its a coincidence} I have all 5
PCI slots filled... (2) pvr-500, 1 pcHDTV, 1 SATA cont, 1 FW cont.. (4) 80
mm case fans, (2) HD, 1 DVD drive... OB sound and nic, Celeron 2.5
Ghz... 300W power supply.. <<-- Could this be tasked? I have only seen
the reboot when I tried access the pvr500 and/or the FW within Mythtv...
Other then that all seems well, rock solid in fact...

There are instructions for the PVR-500 in the Hints & Tips Section. You have to build one of the newer ivtv releases which supports the PVR500.
