Post subject: | R5A16 install problems |
I have just tried to install knoppmyth R5A16 without any luck. I can get through the install process ok, but when my system reboots it locks up right after the "boot from cd" bios msg. I can install and run R5A16 on my computer using VMWARE but not on my actual system. Has anyone else had any problems? I have the following system P4 3G Prescott Gigabyte 8IPE1000Pro2 40GB ATA 100 drive 160GB SATA 1GB Ram DVICO Fusion Plus |

The key to your problem is probably, why is it still trying to boot from CD? - Are you taking the CD out of the drive? - Is the HD listed as a boot device in the BIOS (check your boot order) - Does it think the HD is not bootable for some other reason? (Search the forum there about 3-4 reasons for this problem, including the drive not being installed as the primary master, needing to jumper as CS or MA depending on your BIOS and MoBo chipset, the drive/partition not being marked as bootable by the formatting utility, ...) |

I have found that the Western Digital HDD can be real pricks when it comes to jumper settings. I find that when they are on a channel by themselves they need to be set to CS (Cable Select) and should be on the last connector of the IDE lead. |

TJC and GIRKERS thanks for the reply I may have been a bit misleading about the cdrom booting bit. My BIOS has BOOT FROM CD message as it scans the drive for any bootable disks. If it finds a bootable disk it boots if not it scans the next cdrom drive for a bootable disk, displaying a boot from cd msg each time. I removed the CD from the drive and the bIOS is set to boot from the IDE master. When I tried a manual install after the auto install failed I found that there were no bootable partitions. The problem is I have no idea how to fix the problem in linux as I pretty new with it. |

Search the forum young Jedi! ![]() Seriously, there's a very nice recent posting about how to troubleshoot and fix this problem. The critiacl search terms are probably "bootable" "fdisk" "lilo" . Remember to click the radio button for "Search for all terms". Oooo... I didn't notice the SATA bit at first... You may have to fiddle with you're lilo.conf to make it use the right drive too. |
