Post subject:  Software RAID0/1/5 howto and questions

I've done some poking around and found the following thread that mentions that there isnt much of a gain (if any) for software raid:

http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... light=raid

I'm currently running gentoo and 3x120gb drives all raided together with raid5. While I'd really like to keep the main /home partition I've got spanning all three drives, I dont want to fiddle with getting myth working under gentoo anymore. Since there isnt an OOB solution for Knoppmyth, what would be required for me accomplish this? Also, did I miss the instructions for this when I google'd, searched the wiki, and searched here or have they just not been writen down in an easily accessable manner? I saw the LVM howto, and if all else failed, I'd do that, but I'd really rather use a raid option (to allow for future additional uses of the boxes, not so much expansion which isnt a priority for me). Thank you.

you didn't miss the instructions. while there has been a small bit of discussion about it as you pointed out I don't believe anyone has done it at all, thus no documentation.

just curious, but what about doing the following:

drive 1 = 4 partitions (a, b, c, d. D being the /myth)
drive 2 = 2 partitions (e and d. D being the same as drive1's and e being a,b,c combined)
drive 3 = 2 partitions, same as drive2

so I could raid together the /myth sections, have boot, cache and stuff on drive one, and the other two use as spare partitions for random stuff (which I have plenty of...) :)

This doesn't employ a complete raid solution, but thats ok in the grand scheme of things as a conciliation prize. It has been a while, and since I'm sort of unfamiliar with knoppmyth, how feesable is this (even if constructing the raid after installation/setup)? Thank you

I'm sure there are numerous options for raid, I just have a feeling you will be on your own doing it, as I don't think anyone here has done it.

I did this some time ago. I'm running 3x250GB drives in RAID 5 with XFS + 80GB (split into /,swap,/lvmgroup1) + 120GB (/lvmgroup1). The lvmgroup is for /myth/music and /myth/video. The RAID is /myth/tv/. It just kinda evolved that way.

The only Linux system I totally lost with no hope of recovery was a RAID 5 system using software raid. Don't trust it. LVM is pretty much the same. You lose one partition in the LV and you've lost 'em all. Back up what's important and just understand your recordings could go bye-bye any moment.

i set up a 5 disk raid5 array on debian sarge ontop of lvm using EVMS. It works great. I have had a drive go down a few times and an email is sent to me alerting me but everything just keeps running only slower. After the drive was scanned for bad blocks, I reactivated it and the raid5 array was rebuilt automatically. My media server at home is setup the same way and I've never had a problem. It stores music, movies, and pictures that are mounted to mount points on the mythfrontend computers.

I don't know about the throughput because i think writes are slower. I'd love to have all the master and slave backends to record to a /myth/tv partition on lvm on raid5 but i'm out of hard drives and money.
