Hi all,
I have a generic 800 athlon Pc with a matrox G400 TV and I have not been able to get anywhere. KnoppMythTV says it installs and I reboot after loading for a while the screen goes black. The only way I can get it to come back is to hit CTRL-ATL-F1 which brings up a mythtv login. I login and then what?
Although I am a web programmer by trade but I do not LINUX at all. Does anyone know what I need to do at this point, I have no idea of syntax to install the drivers (which I have on a usb drive but not on the linux box), bring up the desktop, change directories or anything. Everything in the forums I have found seems to assume that your already know Linux......
Thanks for any help you can provide....

you shouldn't need to install any drivers, what you will need to do is get the refresh rates correct. from the console login as root. then do
vi /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
if you don't know how to use vi type vimtutor
then you will need to find the horz and vert refresh rates of your monitor (google is good for this) if you are outputting to a tv the important one is vertical refresh and it should be at 60. look through that file till you find horz and vert refresh and change it to be what your monitor needs. also double check that the driver line has mga and not vesa.

The first monitor is so old and an off brand so I couldn't get any specs, so I hooked up another monitor and I can now get to the Myth TV Menu screen.
Thanks for the advise....
Now I have to find a way to get the g400 video drivers to the Myth Box, Myth TV does NOT see the G400, so even thought the menu runs it does no good till I can get Myth TV to see the G400...
Any more ideas would be welcomed...
Thanks,

knoppmyth should have g400 drivers if you are using mga as they are open source from the days when matrox used to play nice with the open source community. However if you are talking about drivers for the tv tuning addon card I'm not sure. If you put it on a network it would be easy, but offnet it's a bit more difficult.

Thanks xsecrets.....
Yes mythtv Menu will show so the display drivers are working. I was trying to get the capture drivers to work. I was wanting to use the G400 TV to capture composite video/svideo from a video source using MythTV to capture the video and playback, I will not be really using it to control the TV more like a fancy VCR.
I have got the capture drivers copied over using a USB drive but they are conflicting with the xfree86 version, so any ideas on that would be welcomed...
This is like learning a whole new language....

well if they require xorg then they won't work. If that's the case look to see if they have an older version, because I know they had drivers that worked with XFree86 4.3

i just got this working on gentoo using 2.6. xorg and the cvs drivers. it is possible. i didn't use knoppmyth because i wasn't very successful updateing the kernel in that environment. which you need to do to have teh correct modules built for you.

Hi to the newcomer,
There was a recent post about the g400, maybe it will help. try
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... light=g400
Take the steps slow as there are a lot of them for the tweaking of the menus and settings. Then as your knowledge base grows you can get fancy. There are a lot of posts for the newcomer here on the forum also. The search works altho you may have to try a couple of times as it does not read minds.
Also give the folks some of the basic information about the hardware so they don't have to second guess and can be more detailed with an answer. Version is always an important tid bit as things change a little with each up grade. I think most will agree that the R5A16 is rather an awsome collection of software.
Being a web programmer, you will probably have tweaks for us down the road
Enjoy
Mike
