Post subject:  firewire modules

I've just built a system and installed Knoppmyth R5A16 (I'll post system specs at the end) and I wanted to record via firewire from my motorola 6200. I installed, ran through the configuration and set everything the way I thought it was supposed to be, but whenever I hit the "Watch TV" button, I get a black screen and no keyboard response, but I can go to a different shell via alt-ctrl 2 (similar to this problem at the knoppmyth wiki http://knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=FirewireCapture ).

I assume the problem may be because I don't have these firewire modules installed or installed incorrectly: ieee1394, ohci1394 and raw1394. I've seen raw1394 installed at /dev/raw1394.

I saw this http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/fcmyth.php about doing a similar thing (firewire w/ 6200) on Fedora Core and I tried the command "plugreport", but I got an error saying that I didn't have access to raw1394 because it wasn't installed or that it wasn't a directory. I've tried two things, once with the onboard firewire on the motherboard, and then I added a sound blaster audigy. With the built-in, I got that error, then I installed the SBAudigy and it could see the 2 firewire ports (on the card, I think) after a reinstall of knoppmyth and then after a reboot, I got the same error as well.

How would I go about installing those modules (ieee1394, ohci1394 and raw1394) Would I use aptget? how would I go about doing that, step by step? I am a linux newbie, but I've been working with bash on OS X for a couple years, so the terminal doesn't scare me, I just don't know the commands.

I've seen posts like this: http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... ewire+6200 with sucess stories for what I'm trying to do, but I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Many thanks

Set-up
Athlon64 3000+ Venice
Foxconn nForce4 (vanilla) NF4K8MC-EKRS
Gigabyte geForce 6600
Sound Blaster Audigy
WD 320GB HD
NEC DVD-DL burner

If more specifics are needed, I'll gladly add them
btw, the install was seemless up to that point, so I think all the hardware support is there (except maybe the onboard 1394).

Thanks again

run modconf (has to be run as root) then browse through till you find the 1394 stuff and make sure the modules you need are loaded. once you have the modules loaded and then after you have setup your firewire properly in mythtv-setup make sure you are trying to record or watch a regular channel that the box is not needed to decode first. I had problems with the premium channels for a while, and I'm not positive, but I think that they will only work if you have one of your other outputs connected to something, though I haven't confirmed this. It started working, so I didn't touch it again.

Ok, I ran modconf and did see that all the modules were loaded. I then ran plugreport again and got the same error
"raw1394 - couldn't get handle: Permission denied
This error usually means that the raw1394 driver is not loaded or that /dev/raw1394 does not exist"

I did a cd into /dev and I did see that raw1394 was there. I ran modconf again, and checked to see that raw1394 had a "+" next to it, which it does.

I wasn't sure where to look for device settings within /var/log/messages.

Is my backend setup incorrect? For TV Format, I said ATSC, should I say NTSC? My channel frequency table may be incorrect, I wasn't able to figure out which to choose (Comcast, Denver, CO). I called Comcast tech support and they didn't even know what I was talking about, and I didn't really find anything after googling. I've tried multiple installs trying both us-cable and us-cable-hrc. What about the capture card setup? Cardtype: Firewire; Firewire Model: DCT-6200; Firewire Connection Type: Point to Point; Firewire Port: 0; Firewire Node: ? (I think the box is on node 1, and that's what I usually put in); Firewire Speed: 100 Mpbs; Default Intput: MPEG2TS.

Would I be better off with a different distro of linux (I'm more familiar wiith mandriva than anything, would this or another distro be better?) and installing mythtv on top of that?

well if you actually read the wiki page you linked then you should know how to find out what node to use. I didn't change my backend settings, and I think the default is us cable, so try that instead of atsc. don't really know what to tell you about the rest mine "just worked" as you should be able to tell from my other post which I think you referenced also.

I added mythtv to two groups in /etc/group

disk:*:6:mythtv <----
cdrom:*:24:mythtv
audio:!:29:mythtv
video:!:44:mythtv
mythtv:x:105:
plugdev:*:46:mythtv <----

plugreport must be run as root I believe.. {well I only run it as root}

The "mythtv" user must have this to access the hardware.
