Post subject:  R5A16 and nVidia

I'm trying to install KnoppMyth and following this document:

http://knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page ... ythInstall

Auto-install. This document, pointed to by KnoppMythWiki:

http://knoppmythwiki.homelinux.org/?id=KnoppMythInstall

doesn't seem to work. Anyway, my problem is with the nVidia section. After step 4:

Quote:
4. Configuration will proceed, and the front end will attempt to start for the first time.

Well, I have an nVidia ti4600, and it doesn't just attempt to start, it does start. So, is this really necessary:

Quote:
5. If you have an nVidia graphics card, when the front end attempts to start (the Xterm window will disappear and the KnoppMyth desktop will remain on the screen), you will have to install the nVidia graphic drivers. To do this, press <CTRL><ALT><F1> to exit X.

(and also 6, where you actually install)? I also wonder about #7, and XvMC support, since it seems to be downplayed immediately.

After doing this, and things seeming to work, I came back to my machine and found it wasn't synching with the TV. (I hadn't touched it since I had gotten the picture working.) And I find that I have the problem when I install the nvidia drivers.

You definitely want to install the nvidia driver and skip XvMC.

The "nvidia" driver will give you good Xv support, TV-Out, nvidia-settings for tuning, ... and preventing the "choppy video" problems that will occur without it. This will usually mean fixing up your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file but it's absolutely worth the effort.

XvMC is generally quite unstable and suffers from a number of other limitations. The only reason to use it is if you have absolutely no choice and don't have enough CPU horsepower without the hardware assist it provides for MPEG-2 decoding.

Thanks tjc.

I've installed and reinstalled several times but I can't make the video work any more. Plus, once it goes south, I can't see anything--nothing on the TV and nothing on the monitor--so I end up having to reinstall.

I wonder: The install doesn't actually seem to wipe the hard-drive. At least some of the settings I put up in one install seem to still be there when I reinstall. So, I wonder if a full wipe might get me back to some place where I can edit.

I may end up going to FC4. KnoppMyth is great as far as speed of install goes, but I haven't learned enough from installing it to fix my problems. :(

Are you installing using a TV or a monitor? If after installing, you get a blank screen, generally <ctrl><alt><f1> and install the nvidia drivers. If you are using TV out, general, you have to tell the driver that you are using TV out. There is a sample TV out... The drive is wiped during an install. Of course if you are having issues and have not modified anything, how can you tell if you wipe out the drive?

Your comment about FC4 is confusing. If you can't get a modeline working on KnoppMyth, why would it be any easier to get a modeline working on FC4? They both use X for graphics, and you need to create a modeline for your output device either way.

What Xsecrets said. Everytime I install when it reboots the X display is borked. All you need to do is switch virtual consoles, or ssh in from another machine. http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5246

Try some of the stuff I used for nVidia drivers and TV OUT on my setup:

Good Luck!

Here is what I do (going by memory...hopefully this is accurate):

-build r5a16 normally.
-after configuring everything to work properly on the VGA, exit out to the desktop.
-fire up an xterm shell and kill the xwindows: /etc/init.d/gdm stop
-next, login as root
-run the nvidial install scripte: install-nvid (tab tab)...you will get a list of availalble scripts, each one is for a different version of the drivers. I used the higher numbered one.
-after running the script, your x will restart
-next, go back out to the desktop, and backup your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file.
-next, copy your /etc/XF86Config-4.nvidia.tvout-sample (or similarly named) to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

Restart your Mythbox (or /etc/init.d/gdm restart may do it also).

Your output should be on the TV set. This is basically all I had to do. I use a 440MX class nvidia card built into my system, so it's not exactly the same as what you are using. But, the steps above should give you a good idea of what is needed to make use of the tv-out on your nvidia card work.

I actually have a ti4400 on my server, so I *could* test with this card also, but it would be a pain to remove it and try it out...

Hope this helps you in some way.

Following up on Snapper's instructions I have a 440MX and when I install I type
Code:
tv
when the KnoppMyth CD first boots.

After the general install and X tries to load for the first time, this is when I CTRL+ALT+F1 and log in as root. Do the install of the nVidia driver as previously instructed and with the later versions it should start X after the install.

As to XvMC support I have the 7676 driver and XvMC works, but when watching TV and you have an overlay such as the program info it goes to *&$&
