Kind of new to linux, but here is my setup:

ASUS P4S800-MX
Celeron D (2.66 GHz)
PVR 250
nVidia 5200

I get everything installed, but when linux boots, I see it saying SiS900 for the video. After the text stops scrolling, it attempts to load X, but it either never comes up (a blank screen), or it flashes white/grey, flashes pink/darker pink, or what appears to be garbled blue text.

Since it is nVidia, I know I need to load the drivers, but I can't <ctrl><alt><f1>. Just nothing happens. During install, the text is garbled but readable once knoppix boots. When it reboots, and the text is scrolling, it is perfectly readable. I assume that it is still picking up my onboard video during auto-install, and loading the drivers for that, but is there anyway to make it choose the agp slot instead?

I tried using "expert", but I couldn't get that to work either.

I think if I can get to a command line, I can get the nvidia drivers loaded and get this thing working. Any help would be appreciated.

Man, that's the second one this weekend, and it's not even a full moon...

Sorry for the double post, then. I searched, but didn't see it. I still can't find it, if it offers the solution... a link if anyone has it?

Anyway, I disabled the onboard video in the BIOS (don't know why I didn't think about that to begin with - d'oh!). I re-autoinstalled and it gets a little bit further, but ultimately does the same thing.

It now tries to go to download.nvidia.com (I think - I tried it last night and am at work now). It says it can't resolve the host and goes through the rest of the boot and gives me a blank screen. Still no <ctrl><alt><f1>.

The weird thing is that I still see it says SiS900: Already Loaded. But then later it says something like "Checking for nVidia Drivers" and tries to go to the nvidia site. In the mobo manual it says that there are 2 Video chips - an SiS631FX (I think? Check for sure when I get home) and an SiS931 (I think?). Is it still trying to load drivers for the onboard?

chrisn you might want to try CTRL+ALT+f1 and theb crank the brightness on you monitor way up. It may actually be there. That is my problem. Sorry no solution.

Although if you are alive you may be able to ssh in.

I already tried the brightness thing - nothing there, just a blank screen.

I'll try to see if i can SSH into it when i get home.

Just had a thought though - it wouldn't be outputting to the composite or S-Video would it? Instead of the monitor?

I can't tell you. I never actually got that far. But the default should be vga. I think at minmum you would need to add a line to you XFConfig-4 to go to TV or Composite out.

I believe sis900 is for the ethernet chipset.

SiS900 IS the ethernet adapter. I'll see if I can SSH into it and get the drivers loaded. Hopefully, the next time I turn it on, it will resolve download.nvidia.com and just do the work for me...

it will install the nvidia drivers even if it can't resolve download.nvidia.com. It tries that then falls back to the drivers that are already distributed with knoppmyth.

Another thing you should check in the BIOS is if you have it set to allocate an IRQ to VGA. If not, try enabling it.

The distributed aren't the latest. It should work w/ your card.
