I've been planning a KnoppMyth installation for a while now and finally have some hardware cobbled together. I've been using a WinXP configuration with GB-PVR for a bit, so I know the hardware plays nicely under XP, but I only have some rudimentary UNIX skills left over from college, so I think I qualify as a total Linux newbie.

I'm trying to plan a decent installation and partition plan given my storage scenario, and to get an idea of any difficulties that may arise before I start. The machine has:

1 200Gb SATA HD
1 250Gb SATA HD
1 200Gb IDE HD
1 DVD (read-only) drive

Oh, and my tuners are two of the dual-tuner 500MCE Hauppauge cards, so four tuners total (and two FM-radio tuners too, I suppose). I doubt that the tuner setup makes much difference for my question, though.

Obviously, I'll be doing a manual install. My basic plan is to create a single LVM drive for /myth out of the two SATA drives. I'd like to partition the IDE drive into /, swap, and /cache. I think I've read enough to know that this is possible, but I'd appreciate confirmation.

My other (related) issue is where to put /myth/music. I'm hoping to put a large amount of music on the machine to use it as a music server, and I'm torn between two options:

A. Create an even larger combined LVM drive for /myth by including both SATA drives *and* whatever space is left over on the IDE drive after the /, swap, and /cache partitions. I don't even know if this is possible, much less advisable, but I'd appreciate any comments.

B. Leave /myth on the LVM with the two SATA drives, but try to point MythTV to use another partition (the leftover space on the IDE drive) for its /music subdirectory. Again, I don't know if this is possible.

Am I even close to a workable scenario? I don't really want to start the install before forming a good partitioning plan, so I'd appreciate any advice you nice folks can offer.

Follow scenario A.

Do an automatic install to the IDE drive (make sure it's the primary master!), then follow the LVM steup directions on the wiki to convert it over. Pay attention to the notes there for setting up LVM with more than 512Gb.

Thanks very much! I didn't realize I could do an automatic install with an IDE drive if I also had SATA drives present. Even though the IDE drive is the master on IDE channel 0, I thought the SATA drives counted "higher" on the drive hierarchy.

This approach makes my life much easier, thanks again!

The priority of the drives will be dependent on the settings in your bios.
