Nope.
The keyword you're looking for is VBI. This is refering to the fact that the information is sent during the "vertical blanking interval" - the period during which the electron beam returns to the start postion on the screen for another scanning pass. VBI passthorough isn't working yet for PVR cards with MythTV.

I actually managed to make it work, but I use PVR-350 and use the tv-out output.
just need to run the command:
ivtvctl -x 1 -w wss,cc
for adding in boot:
edit /etc/init.d/set_ivtv_params
I can see perfectly the Closed captions, however from time to time if I reboot the machine, the closed caption looks like gibrish, just nonse.
for instance instead of "hello man" it will write" lloehnma", etc.
happend to anyone ? know how to fix it ?
Thanks,
Danny

CC now works for certain PVR cards with MythTV 0.19, for example the recordings made on my PVR-250 have it, but those on the PVR-15 don't. I believe this is due to some firmware or driver issue. From: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Release_Notes_-_0.19
Quote: Closed captioning support on PVR-250/350 (but not 150/500) cards, DVB subtitles, and other cards supporting VBI information.

I noticed that. That is great news, except I have the PVR-150. I'm at least happy to know that they aer working on it, and a solution/new driver may soon follow.

Caption on the PVR-150 is supported, but there is something between the ivtv driver and mythtv which makes it not work. For example, if you compile zvbi and go to the test directory and run:
./capture --dump-cc
You will see caption from the PVR-150.

No idea why it doesn't work. This is a question for the MythTV developers (the quote above is from the MythTV release notes) not the KnoppMyth Forums. There is a difference...

Does it bring PVR150 caption support? What I did above works on any distro as long as it has ivtv 0.4 and zvbi binaries...

Here is a follow-up from ivtvdriver folks: I haven't tried it yet.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi all,
Thanks to the efforts of Christopher Neufeld and some final tweaks last weekend by me it is now possible to capture closed captions with the cx25840-based cards like the PVR150/500.
I would appreciate it if people could test this for me. It is currently
only available in the ivtv-0.4.6 development snapshot from subversion.
You can download it here:
http://ivtvdriver.org/viewcvs/ivtv/bran ... z?view=tar
I believe the latest MythTV should support it out of the box.
Note 1: CC capturing (or to be precise: sliced VBI capturing) has always worked for the PVR250/350 (saa7115-based cards) and for PAL on the cx25840-based cards. Just NTSC for the cx25840 never worked, until now.
Note 2: it is unlikely to be supported with ivtv-0.6 and ivtv-0.7
(released when the 2.6.17 kernel is released) because they rely on the cx25840 module from the kernel and the required patches will only go into 2.6.18.

The "not work" is for the PVR-150 and PVR-500. See my second posting in this thread.
BTW - The new 0.4.6 version of the ivtv driver is supposed to fix that. I has "NTSC sliced VBI"(?) support for the chips that those cards use.

UPDATE: I tried the above latest code from ivtvdriver.org and I'm happy to report that I am NOW getting perfect closed captions on my PVR-150!
Download the update, untar, make, make install
During the make install, it instructed to "hide" the old modules like this:
mv /lib/modules/2.6.15-chw-2/kernel/drivers/media/video/cx25840/cx25840.ko /lib/modules/2.6.15-chw-2/kernel/drivers/media/video/cx25840/cx25840.ko.HIDE
mv /lib/modules/2.6.15-chw-2/kernel/drivers/media/video/saa7127.ko /lib/modules/2.6.15-chw-2/kernel/drivers/media/video/saa7127.ko.HIDE
Then 'make install' again.
I then had to enable CC during reboot. I did it by editing:
/etc/init.d/set_ivtv_params (and added:)
$IVTVCTL -d /dev/video$f -c dnr_mode=0,dnr_temporal=0
#
# Turn on CC
#
$IVTVCTL -d /dev/video$f -b cc -x 1
Thats how I did it. Good luck to anyone who wants to try it now. ________ Weed vaporizer

mz4wheeler wrote: I REALLY need CC to work with mythtv.
Me too!!!!
poor support for closed captions is what has kept me away from DVRs in general especailly myth TV. but just last week I had an idea.
What I plan to do is find a set-top box CC decoder on ebay (I've found several actually havn't bought one yet, most go for about $20 which makes me happy)
The captions would be always on, but that's ok with me.
I've only used Closed captions when the decoder is built into the TV, but I assume that a CC decoder has a tuner in it, and you change the channels through it, kindof like a cable box.
This is where I hope some one can help me, what do I need to do to change the chanel on the CC decoder?
I'm wondering if maybe the above directions are a better way to go about it.
