Is it possible to install MythTV on a pre-made PVR that you could buy from a store?

It seems like all the required hardware is there (including a good capture and output). You'd probably have to install Linux and MythTV through the USB port considering there's no CD-ROM. But that shouldn't be a problem.

You could get a brand new Tivo box for $99, convert it to MythTV, and never have to pay a monthly fee.

Am I missing something? Is this oversimplified?

Could it possibly work!?!?

I haven't heard of it, although that is certainly a great idea. Here is a thread talking about installing plain debian on a TiVo. Seems somewhat involved.

Maybe it would be possible to use the AMICUS project if you had a base debian install?

If you "lease" a TiVo from your local mega electronic store and take it back after you figure an answer. That could be a fun project. (Check store return policy before "leasing").

Here is another thread on the topic, noting not possible yet...

problem is there are no drivers for much of the hardware, at least not that you can get your hands on unless you are a developer for tivo. It's been discussed here before and there was a link to a great article about all the hardware problems.
