Post subject:  Democracy Player

Looks like they have finally released a Linux version of the Democracy Player
http://www.getdemocracy.com/watch/

Has anyone done any playing with it yet? It seems like it might be a good way to get Podcasts and if the "channels" thing works it might even be a great way to bring added content to a Mythtv box.

Did a bit of searching on Google as well and I found that there might be a commandline version in the works as well:

Sounds great

Post subject:  Would Democracy Player be a Good Addition to MythTV?

I just installed Democracy Player on my Ubuntu Dapper Drake system and it is a very interesting application.

WHAT IS IT?
Democracy Player is essentially an RSS aggregator of videos available on the internet.

WHAT IS SO GOOD ABOUT IT?
Interface - Pretty simple and intuitive. Doesn't feel like an RSS aggregator and tries to be "TV-like" and appeal to the "average" user.

Easy to Find Content - Videos are organized into categories that can be browsed. Categories can be searched. Easy to find out videos that I have stored, watched, and soon-to-be expired.

Variety of Content - There is stuff here that just isn't available through traditional TV distribution channels (at least here in the US). It really opens my mind to other content that I never knew existed before. Some of the content is professionally produced (for example, the Nova/PBS series).

WHY SHOULD MYTHTV DEVELOPERS CARE?
Adds another media channel to the "convergence" concept of MythTV.

I would rather watch internet videos on my TV rather than my computer.

Appears that more and more video content will be available via the Internet in future.

IN SUMMARY
I think it would be cool to be able to watch video content that is available from various Internet sources (Google Video, Democracy Player-like, etc.).

Anyone else tried to install this on a MythTV system? Can't it be used in a similar way that Firefox is? Just sort of "tagged on." If no one else has tried it I would be willing to give it a try myself. I just don't want to spend a lot of time at it if someone else has already done the work.

Long ago I had MythStream running pretty easily to handle TV/Radio streaming broadcasts. But then the big 0.19 Myth upgrade came and at that time it didn't work.

I haven't gotten around to looking into it again, so I pulled it up in Google. It appears to have been fixed for 0.19 and Myth SVN (as of June 2006).

It came with a few channels, but I had to browse around to find other links myself and add them to the text config file. There are a few web sites that list hundreds of video broadcasts.

Hmm, now I might have to toy with it again. See what you made me do?
