I just got an Air2PC card running with R5E50. Seems to work pretty well, from the short test that I ran. Then I looked at the file on disk and discovered I'm burning 100MB per minute. Before I rush out and invest in half a terabyte of storage... are there any ATSC capture cards that do hardware encoding to Xvid / MPEG4? I figure it's unlikely, but thought I'd check with the experts to be sure.

Thanks,

Boris

100mb/min sounds about right. On the 1080i channels I get about 7-8gb/hr for an hour and the 720p channels I get about 5-6gb/hr from my Air2pc cards.

I'm in the process of updating the wiki with available capture cards so if you figure this out drop me a line and I'll include that.

Nobody re-encodes the HD signal on the card. The content in an HD broadcast is already encoded as an MPEG2 Transport Stream. The card doesn't do any encoding at all, actually, it just demodulates the signal and stores the data stream to a hard disk. It is very unlikely you'll find a solution that re-encodes the signal as Xvid in hardware on the card. Sorry.

You could set up your recordings to automatically transcode to MPEG4 after the HD recording is captured.

Good point. I won't be using this box as a frontend, so it may be that automatically transcoding at the software level will be an option for me. Will be interesting to see how long transcoding an hour of HD to MPEG4 will take on my wimpy VIA EPIA box.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!
