I am having a hard time figuring out a suitable modeline for my Panasonic TH-42PX50 plasma screen. I have searched this forum and also googled for an existing modeline for this screen but cannot find anything.
I know there are tons of posts on this forum about modelines but I have read up on them and cannot find anything which helps me with this problem.
I have done my homework and determined that there are the following modeline generators available ..
XFree86 Modeline Generator (at Sourceforge)
videogen
Powerstrip (but requires install on windows platform)
Another Modeline Generator (at
http://amlc.berlios.de/)
I haven’t been able to find out all the specs I would like for my screen, the following is from the user manual:
Video input, NTSC
Horizontal frequency = 15.73Khz
Vertical frequency = 59.94Hz
Applicable input signals
Signal_name horz_freq(khz) vert_freq (Hz)
1 525 (480) /60i 15.73 59.94
2 525 (480) /60p 31.47 59.94
3 750 (720) /60p 45.00 59.94
4 1125 (1080) /60i 33.75 59.94
(this is exactly as it appears in the manual)
I have not been able to find the maximum pixel clock or bandwidth figure in the manual.
Originally I was aiming for 1080i but I have read that the screen only has a native resolution of 1024x769. It has an aspect ratio of 16:9 and I have read that the 42 Panasonic plasma screens use non-square pixels (although I have not been able to confirm this in the manual)
I am assuming that 1080i (or as close as I can get to that resolution) is what I should be aiming for although I have read in this forum of many people who seem to prefer 720p for their various screens. To help me understand how to build a modelline for my screen perhaps someone could help me understand how to build one for 1080i?
I tried the XFree86 calculator at Sourceforge and it keeps coming back with a much smaller vertical resolution and I am wondering if that modeline calculator can’t handle non-square pixels. For example, these are the values I enter in XFree86 calculator ..
Under Monitor Configuration section:
Horizontal Sync Min = 15.73, Max = 33.75
Refresh rate = Min (left blank), Max = 59.94
Under Basic Configuration:
Visible Resolution: 1024 x 768
Refresh Rate = 59.94
Under Constrain Aspect Ratio, I set it to 16:9
Then I press the ‘calculate’ button ..
It prints out the following modeline ..
Modeline "1024x576@60" 45.77 1024 1056 1224 1256 576 587 593 605
And tells me that the Horizontal Sync Frequency = 36.44kHz
BUT I see that under the visible resolution that has been changed to: 1024 x 576 !!
What I don’t understand is why the horizontal resolution is not still showing as ‘768’, could it be related to the fact that my screen has non-square pixels?
Thanks in advance for your help,
Kevin
