We in the US have less than 7 months to setup an HDTV PVR w/o the broadcast flag. Please use this section of to the forum to discuss setting up an HDTV capable PVR. If you set one up, please describe your setup. If you have any helpful links, please post them.

Thanks,

Cecil

Post subject:  Tuners without broadcast flag

Is the HD-3000 the only tuner that ignores the broadcast flag?

Thanks Xsecrets.
Do you know if the studios get their way in the future will we all wish we had HD-3000's? I was about to order an HD-5500 and I see there are some 3000's on ebay. I'd like to plan for the future.
Thanks

Part of my answer just came in the mail. I'd asked about the HD-3000, HD-5000, and HD-5500.

... all three cards ignore the broadcast flag. The broadcast flag is just a bit in the ATSC stream or MPEG2 TS stream that can be set or not. You can look at the bit in software but the card its self does not monitor the bit stream. The MPAA wanted the hardware to monitor it and encrypt the stream if set but the courts said no to the FCC rule and now only Congress could make that a law. The MPAA is still trying.

They're at it again, this time using Ted Stevens as their medium:

Senator Stevens sounds he does NOT have a good grip on technology and should stick to enviormental issues.

Some of his wisdom on network neutrality.

The basic problem is that their side has nearly unlimited resources, the ability to constantly pay attention to the issue, and (obviously) control of the media. And they only have to win once, whereas we have to win every time. It's not a question of _if_ the broadcast flag will become law, it's _when_. Unless you can find a Constitutional issue, which is highly unlikely.

I think this is why video podcasts (aka vodcasts) are beginning to gain in popularity. The real "killer app" would be a hit show that was only available as a download. Imagine Battlestar Galactica or LOST or CSI as a vodcast. A show like that could widen the market on its own. We just have to make sure MythTV and KnoppMyth are ready to become the application of choice for this widened market.
