I wonder what sort of signal DVI enabled DVD players and HD tuners send out to the TV? It seems they would have to support all DVI TVs pretty much automatically. Is there any way to find out what they're doing?

Yeah. I guess I'm just surprised that an electrical engineer type (ie. not me) hasn't rigged something up to to see what sort of signals are being output by those devices. But maybe it isn't as straight forward as someone who doesn't know any better (ie. me) thinks. :-)

Okay here's what I did.

I used Astera's modeline for 720p but I enabled

Option "UseEdidFreqs" "True"
Option "IgnoreEDID" "False"

And guess what it worked! in fact I have several modelines in there and a lot more validated..

This is for a Toshiba 52HM84

(**) NVIDIA(0): Validated modes for display device DFP-0:
(**) NVIDIA(0): Mode "1280x720": 74.2 MHz, 45.0 kHz, 60.0 Hz
(**) NVIDIA(0): Mode "1280x666": 74.2 MHz, 45.0 kHz, 60.0 Hz
(**) NVIDIA(0): Mode "960x540": 42.2 MHz, 33.8 kHz, 60.0 Hz
(**) NVIDIA(0): Mode "720x480": 30.8 MHz, 33.8 kHz, 60.0 Hz

The middle two are some weird ones I found.

I still have a bit of overscan so I have to work that out..

Keywords for google: 52HM84 HM84 Modeline Toshiba Linux

Also a interesting read.

I'll have to look at the overscan options here..

FYI I'm using a DVI>HDMI cable 58 dollars from Fry's.

Now to get AC3 working out the fiber output on the Shuttle XPC
