I've picked up a DVI to HDMI cable and am looking to start work on the modelines for my Toshiba 52HM84 HDTV set.
However I'm not sure where to start. Has anyone already done this and/or know of a good writeup?
TIA

I don't have dvi of any sort, so I haven't really researched this, but from what I've seen this is basically a no go. Which makes sense because hdmi is supposed to be limited to 480p or something like that unless you have the drm stuff which of course linux doesn't can't won't have.

Nope I've done 1900x1080i off my Radeon 9700 pro using powerstrip.
I've got to fix the EDID limit under linux, figure out my DisplaySize so my fonts look right and then deal with the overscan issue.

well let us know if you get it working in linux, because I don't believe I've actually heard any success stories.

I just hooked up a DVI to HDMI cable today to my Sony KDF-42WE655.
Works well.
The relevant sections of /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 are as follows:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "nvidia"
EndSection
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP"
Option "IgnoreEDID"
VendorName "Sony"
ModelName "KDF-42WE655"
HorizSync 30 - 50
VertRefresh 59 - 61
DisplaySize 320 180 # 16:9
ModeLine "ATSC-720p60Hz" 74.160 1280 1352 1392 1648 720 725 730 750
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultColorDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "ATSC-720p60Hz"
EndSubSection
EndSection
I needed the "IgnoreEDID" or XFree86 would default to a screen size of 640x480
I also needed to open up the VertRefresh to 59 - 61 from the normal 60 or XFree86 wouldn't use the ATSC modeline (complained about it not being in range). XFree86 then defaulted to 800x600
(the TV set worked with both 640x480 and 800x600)
Now XFree reports that it is using the "ATSC-720p60Hz" modeline with a virtual screen size of 1280x720.
All MythTV menu screens are now full screen.
Live TV and watching recordings look about the same as with s-video. But now I can watch widescreen DVDs in full wide-screen.

That modeline works perfectly with my Sony KDF-50WE655.
Thank you! I've been trying to get this to work in HD mode for a while now.
Now I notice that I have no sound in the DVI input mode, obviously because the PC has no way to inject sound into the dvi to hdmi cable I purchased. Is there a way to make this work by changing the default TV sound input for DVI mode, or do I need to purchase another cable or just use some computer speakers?

DVI is video only.
If you want to use the speakers on the TV, just run 2 analog audio cables to the set from your sound card. Plug them into the red and white RCA jacks next to the HDMI port on the TV. You'll need a mini stereo to RCA adapter to plug the 2 audio cables into your sound card.
I have an AV receiver, so I use a digital audio cable to connect the sound card to the receiver and I don't bother with the TV's speakers.
