As the days go by it seems like the more problems I get...

When watching live OTA HDTV with my HD-3000 the mythfrontend crashes after about 30 minutes. It seems that my the problem is my swap, but I can't figure out how to fix it. Here's the entry from my syslog

I have a 300GB SATA Seagate hard drive and 512MB DDR400 RAM. It's partitioned as follows:

sda1 /root 3GB
sda2 /swap 768MB
sda3 /cache 10GB
sda4 /myth 280GB+

If I do hdparm -tT I get this:
Code:
/dev/sda:
 Timing cached reads:   2044 MB in  2.00 seconds = 1021.94 MB/sec
HDIO_DRIVE_CMD (NULL) (wait for flush complete) failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
 Timing buffered disk reads:  176 MB in  3.00 seconds =  58.58 MB/sec
HDIO_DRIVE_CMD (NULL) (wait for flush complete) failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

Again, this is a serial ATA drive...

Thanks everyone for trying to help. I'm frustrated by this at times, but I'm learning alot and I really like the potential of my mythbox! :D

Are you sure you have swap mounted? It said "total swap 0 KB" from your log:

Dec 10 14:40:21 mythbox kernel: Free swap = 0kB
Dec 10 14:40:21 mythbox kernel: Total swap = 0kB
Dec 10 14:40:21 mythbox kernel: Free swap: 0kB

Try "free" command, which should output something like this:

total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 515724 461180 54544 0 11288 323888
-/+ buffers/cache: 126004 389720
Swap: 987956 108360 879596

You need to have following line in your fstab:

/dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0

Don't you mean:
Code:
/dev/sda2 none swap defaults 0 0

Edited to leave only the valid entry.

Hmmmm...apparently I made the partition when I installed, but never formatted it. How did that happen?

This is what my fstab originally looked like:
Code:
# /etc/fstab: filesystem table.
#
# filesystem  mountpoint  type  options  dump  pass
/dev/sda1  /  ext3  defaults,errors=remount-ro  0  1
/dev/sda3  /cache  auto  defaults,auto  0  2
/dev/sda4  /myth  auto  defaults,auto  0  2

proc  /proc  proc  defaults  0  0
sysfs /sys   sysfs defaults  0  0
/dev/fd0  /mnt/floppy  vfat  defaults,user,noauto,showexec,umask=022  0  0
/dev/cdrom /cdrom  iso9660  defaults,ro,user,noexec,noauto  0  0
/dev/cdromhdc /cdromhdc  iso9660  defaults,ro,user,noexec,noauto  0  0
# Added by KNOPPIX
/dev/sda2 /mnt/sda2 auto noauto,users,exec 0 0

I had to:

#mkswap -L swap /dev/sda2
#swapon -a
#reboot

If there was a better way to do this or anything else I need to do (i.e. change mtab?), please let me know.

This is how my new fstab looks:
Code:
# /etc/fstab: filesystem table.
#
# filesystem  mountpoint  type  options  dump  pass
/dev/sda1  /  ext3  defaults,errors=remount-ro  0  1
/dev/sda2 /swap  swap defaults  0 0
/dev/sda3  /cache  auto  defaults,auto  0  2
/dev/sda4  /myth  auto  defaults,auto  0  2

proc  /proc  proc  defaults  0  0
sysfs /sys   sysfs defaults  0  0
/dev/fd0  /mnt/floppy  vfat  defaults,user,noauto,showexec,umask=022  0  0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom  iso9660  defaults,ro,user,noexec,noauto  0  0
/dev/cdromhdc /cdromhdc  iso9660  defaults,ro,user,noexec,noauto  0  0

After reboot, I can see the swap partition is mounted in my /var/log/syslog and I can tune an OTA HD channel, but the swap does not seem to be used. When I use the free command my swap partition is reported to be 768MB / zero used / 768MB available.

Right now I'm leaving my local PBS HD feed tuned overnight. I'll check it in the morning to see if the mythfrontend crashes. I was seeing some pixelation/tiling running thru the picture every 20-30 seconds or so. I'm hoping this was just random OTA interferance and not the signs of a problem looming. I was getting heavy pixelation shortly before the mythfrontend was crashing before.

To the best tech support I've ever dealt with, Goodnight. Thanks very much for the help. I'll post tomorrow (rather, later today) regarding how things are going with this issue.

Your problem is that the /etc/fstab entry is wrong. Swap is not supposed to be mounted as part of the file system. Use the example in my post above exactly as shown. It's cut & pasted directly from a working system with the only change being the device name. Here's what the whole thing looks like on my system (do not use this directly since you've got sda and I've got hda):
Code:
root@black2:~# cat /etc/fstab
# /etc/fstab: filesystem table.
#
# filesystem  mountpoint  type  options  dump  pass
/dev/hda1  /  ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro  0  1
/dev/hda3  /cache  auto  defaults,auto  0  2
/dev/vg/myth /myth auto  defaults,auto  0  2

proc  /proc  proc  defaults  0  0
sysfs /sys   sysfs defaults  0  0
/dev/fd0  /floppy  vfat  defaults,user,noauto,showexec,umask=022  0  0
/dev/cdrom /cdrom  iso9660  defaults,ro,user,noexec,noauto  0  0
/dev/cdromhdc /cdromhdc  iso9660  defaults,ro,user,noexec,noauto  0  0
# Added by KNOPPIX
/dev/hda2 none swap defaults 0 0
root@black2:~# free
total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:        513800     388620     125180          0      77576      66304
-/+ buffers/cache:     244740     269060
Swap:       955856          8     955848

Thanks tjc. However, it seems the frontend is freezing up after about 15-30 seconds.

Taking your advice, this is my most recesnt fstab file:
Code:
# /etc/fstab: filesystem table.
#
# filesystem  mountpoint  type  options  dump  pass
/dev/sda1  /  ext3  defaults,errors=remount-ro  0  1
/dev/sda3  /cache  auto  defaults,auto  0  2
/dev/sda4  /myth  auto  defaults,auto  0  2

proc  /proc  proc  defaults  0  0
sysfs /sys   sysfs defaults  0  0
/dev/fd0  /mnt/floppy  vfat  defaults,user,noauto,showexec,umask=022  0  0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom  iso9660  defaults,ro,user,noexec,noauto  0  0
/dev/cdromhdc /cdromhdc  iso9660  defaults,ro,user,noexec,noauto  0  0
#Added by KNOPPIX
/dev/sda2  swap  swap  defaults  0  0

Output of free:

Code:
total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:        513052     507416       5636          0        268      57212
-/+ buffers/cache:     449936      63116
Swap:       755044      34396     720648

Swap being added from syslog:
Code:

Can you record an HD stream w/o issue? If so, you problem may be with /cache. fsck the filesytem, check for free space, etc.

cesman,
No I cannot record the HD stream and play it back later. Today I had time (at work  ) to google around a bit and found two interesting threads. I referenced them in another post I made here. It seems that the standard 2MB buffer that MythTV uses does not cut the mustard for high bandwith HD streams. It was also suggested that the user switch to a faster file system, such as JFS or XFS. I'm going to try to change my /cache and /myth partitions to JFS later tonight or tomorrow (currently ext3, me thinks) and see if my problem clears up.

What's the problem with your recording and playback? No picture or no sound?

One thing I noticed you used PS, instead of TS. I had audio problem with PS mode. You may want to try TS too.

JFS and ext3 should make no difference, at least for me.

Follow the above link in my previous post. I can get picture and sound, but after a few seconds it would freeze.

Tonight I tried changing my file system to JFS. Things seem a little better, but still not good enough to watch. I don't freeze up after a few seconds, but still a lot of jerky/stuttering (every second or two), dropped frames (?) and audio hits. I tried with XvMC on/off, Extra audio buffering on/off and I'm trying TS mode now as well. I'm going to leave it up overnight to see if it freezes.

Any ideas?

I left my local PBS OTA HD channel tuned overnight. When I went to bed I was having some jerky/stuttering video and audio drop outs. However, I did not crash or freeze overnight! Progress! When I turned it on the morning it appeared the program was playing back smoothly, both audio and video. However, when I change channels, the jerkey video with stuttering and audio drop outs returns. I flipped to KCBS-DT OTA signal. Program was not HD, but I had the a/v problems. I then flipped back to the PBS HD feed and I still had issues. Any ideas why it seems to "settle down" after a while and then if I disturb it it acts up?

I think it is "normal" to have stutter and pause when OSD is displayed. I read other people have it too. I don't know if anyone successfully fixed this problem. It should settle down within 20 seconds. When it enters stutter mode, if I try to do skip forward to quickly, I can get frontend lockup. I just learned to do things slowly and live with it.

Please let me know if you have found a fix.

The audio/video problems persist even after the OSD goes away. I had KCBS-DT on for about 10 minutes and the a/v problems never went away. I was unable to hang out long enough to wait for the PBS HD to clear up. (Work, work, work.) I set up a couple test records during the day today while I'm at work. I'll check on those when I get home later tonight.

For now, I'd say that a more robust file system for /cache and /myth, such as JFS definately helps with HDTV. See the Knoppmyth Wiki for info on how to change your file system.

It is not normal to have stuttering for long periods of time after osd activity. I might get one stutter (maybe .5 to 1 sec tops) after the osd leaves unless I enable xvmc, then yes the stuttering is there and there is no fix that I know of.

I seemed to have made this tollerable by enabling OpenGL and XvMC. I get a smooth playback now, but still get some globs of pixelation every now and again. I'm still going to tinker.

Xsecrets (and anyone else who's happy with their playback), what are your option settings in XF86Config-4? These are mine:
Code:
        Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP"
        Option "TVStandard" "HD1080i"
        Option "NoLogo" "1"
     # Option "RenderAccel" "1"
        Option "HWCursor" "1"
     # Option "NvAGP" "3"
     # Option "FlatPannelProperties" "Scaling = native, Dithering = default"
     #Option "ExactModeTimingsDVI" "1"

I was thinking of looking into using NvAGP instead of the default APGART, but from what I can tell from this thread it takes a kernel recompile. I don't know if I want to mess with a recompile just yet. There's also a bit in there about increasing the standard write buffer up to 16MB for HDTV. I would not mind seeing that as an option in KnoppMyth (hint, hint) :D
