I'm just getting my mythbox working, and I go to an HDTV channel and it displays as if the content is 4:3, i.e. it's stretching it so there's letterbox on the video. If I watch the show directly from the cable box it formats it correctly, 16:9. The mythtv interface displays correctly at 16:9.

When I force the aspect ratio to display at 4:3 it seems like it looks correct. Is this a problem or just a quirk?

And how would I correct this problem with DVDs? I don't know if the default player for DVDs is mplayer, but it is for my install. How would I change that?

Thanks for the help.

I'm not actually running Knoppmyth, but this doesn't seem like a FC4 issue, it seems like mythtv.

System Specs:
Athlon64 3000+
nForce4 motherboard
geForce 6600
Sound Blaster Audigy
Motorola 6200 STB via Firewire
Fedora Core 4
MythTV 0.18.1

if you'd like to know anything more, I'll gladly post it. If anybody wants to see my xorg.conf file I can put that up as well.

It isn't a MythTV issue, it is an issue for whatever you are using to playback the DVD. If you are using MPlayer, you need to add "-monitoraspect 16:9" to the line that configuration settings.

And if you're using xine to play DVDs, you need to modify your XF86Config file and add a DisplaySize line that is in the proper 16:9 ratio:

As for your HDTV displaying incorrectly, what modeline are you using? Is it 16:9 or 4:3?

You set the resolution that your system uses by creating a modeline and setting XFree86 or X.org to use that modeline. Most distros include modelines that work with monitors. They usually include standard 4:3 modelines like 1024x768 or 1600x1200. You may have to add or uncomment modelines that give you 16:9 aspect ratios.

With KnoppMyth the doc you'd change is at /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. No idea what FC4 or X.org uses; I'd advise reading up on how to change resolutions with FC4. This is pretty standard stuff and you should be able to find a number of HOWTOs.
