OK, I tried to re-config to 1080i, but it looks like the driver doesn't support that resolution. Got an error during load of x-server, and the highest resolution it reports support for is 1024x768.

From what I've read the 9200SE does support 1920x1080. I suspect the issue is with the driver. There are a few threads out there about how to install a new driver from the ATI web site, but it also warns that the driver doesn't work for non-ATI cards using the ATI chip set. Unfortunately, that describes my card :-(.

Time to stop spending time on my old ATI card -- I'm off to get an FX5200. Does anyone know if there is a way to move from the ATI card to the nvidia FX 5200 card without doing a re-install?

- Run the /usr/local/bin/install-nvidia-7174-debian.sh script.

- Swap in an appropriate XF86Config-4 (see the example on the wiki)

- reboot

Can anybody think of anything I'm forgetting here? Oh yeah, that example doesn't have any hi-def modelines so you'll have to hunt down one that does... And you might need to use 8178 (search for that number here) instead of 7174 to get good 1080i output.

TJC, thanks for the pointer. I took a look at the script and it looks like if I make a copy of the script "install-nvidia-7174-debian.sh " and simply change the setting of "VER" to point at 8178, it should download and install version 8178 of the driver. Any known issues with taking the approach?

In terms of the modeline, my impression is that the modeline settings are dependent on the paramters of the output display rather than the graphics card. Does this sound correct? Based on doing a bunch of digging about Samsung DLP TV's I plan to use the following settings:

The Horizontal and vertical refresh rates, as well as the pixel clock speed (74.250) come right out of my sets manual. The remainder of the settings come from an on-line modeline calculater...

If you had searched for 8178 as suggested you would have found this thread (out of 7 hits) with full directions: http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=7244 You can even skip the wget since the script will do that itself.

Modeline is most dependant on the monitor, but the card has to be fast enough able to handle the implied dot clock and have enough memory for all the pixels.

BTW - You also need to fix the screen section to refer to it.

TJC, I did do that search and found that article. I started to read the directions linked to in the initial postings of the thread and decided instead to look at the script. I didn't get down far enough into the thread to see your postings where you talk about doing something similiar, but I've found them now.

My next problem is the starting point for an XF86Config-4 file. The one I found in the twiki is for svideo out, max res of 800x600. I'm using the VGA out at 1024x768 -- not using the svideo connector at all. I've done some searching but I haven't found a starting point and I'm not familiar enough with the XF86config-4 file to tweak it from the Svideo connector to the VGA connector. Does anyone have an XF86Config-4 for an FX5200 that uses the VGA output that they can post?

Also, the thread on upgrading the nvidia drivers talks about running "updated-rc.d" to prevent the reinstalled of rhte nvida drivers at boot time. Is there a similiar step I need to take to prevent hte re-installing of the ATI drivers at boot time, given that I'm coming from an ATI video card?

search in the hdtv section of the forum, I know I've posted mine here a couple of times and it has 720p and 1080i modelines in it. that I use on a 5200.

Here is where I am now. I've replace the ATI card with a Powercolor FX5200-based card and the nvida 8178 driver. I can get the VGA out working with a 1024x768 modeline, but none of the 1920x1080 modelines I've tried are working. Some of them result in a blank screen:

search fro edid on the forums, you may have to tell X to ignore what your monitor tells it.

X, thanks for the pointer. I found the thread, but after some more analysis I realize that the modeline that I thought should work actually does create a h-freq that is out of range and the reject is legit. What I've also noticed is that the log shows that the EDID query returns the legit H-sync & V-refresh range for my set, so I suspect this is not the problem.

After some more searching and experimenting I was able to get a modeline for 720p that works reasonably well on my Samsung DLP HLR-5067W

It's all working now, with my CPU averaging 40% idle during playback of 1080i recordings that are 8GB/hour and 75% idle when playing back sdef recordings that are 3GB/hour :-). In a nutshell:

1. I am using xvmc. Minor glitches for a few seconds after ff/rewind are not a big deal. As others have noted, it settles in after a few seconds.

2. Reverted to version 6629 of the Nvidia driver. This was key -- CPU utiliztion dropped from 100% to 60% with this change.

3. A review of the log file shows that version 6629 of the driver does not properly interpert EDID responses. I disabled EDID responses.

4. I used the 1080i modeline developed by Ben Johnson in his thread at http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... vidia+6629.

When recording one hidef show while playing back another, already-recorded hdef recordings, my CPU is 75% utilizated.

I am using a P4-2.4GHZ with RDRAM and an Nvidia FX 5200 video card connected to my Samsung DLP TV HLR-5067W. The output is stunning. Even my wife likes it!
