I am encountering a problem with playback of two recorded files. It only happens with these two recordings, both of which were made on channel 702 which transmits at 1280x720. I can successfully play back other recordings made from this and other hidef channels.

The symptoms are a bit different based on weather or not XVMC is enabled. If XVMC is enabled the message "Unable to initialize video" is displayed and any subsequent attempts to watch any recording will fail in the same way. If XVMC is not enabled, the front-end dies.

I've already verified the contents of XvMCConfig contains "/usr/X11R6/lib/libXvMCNVIDIA_dynamic.so.1". I am using R5A30.2, Nvidia driver version 6629. I have captured segments of ".xsession-errors.log".

Scenario#1: XVMC enabled, "Unable to initialize video".

Scenario#2: Without XVMC enabled, front-end dies:

Scenario#3: Without XVMC enabled, different recording from same channel, plays properly.

Which video card do you have? XvMC ony works for certain VIA and nVidia chipsets.

Thank you for replying. My card is an FX5200-based card sold under the name "Powerspec". I don't think the issue is XvMC as there are playback problems with this recording weather XvMC enabled or disabled. It only happens with 2 specific recordings -- doesn't happen with other recordings obtained from the same or other HD channel. My second and third log extracts from my oriignal message are both with XVMC off, but with different recording. In one case the front-end dies; in the other case, the recording plays normally. The log entires for the playback where the front-end dies contains these two extra messages:



An interesting data point is that I am able to play back the recording with VLC version 0.84, although I do get the following messages:



I have not had the problem occur with any subsequent recording, so I am wondering if there was some corruption in the recorded stream that is causing the problem.

I find that roughly 10% - 15% of my HDTV recordings exhibit the problem I described in my first post. As a workaround I have set up the "video library" to play my hidef recordings with mplayer. Whenever a recording blows up the mythfrontend, I go in via "video library" to play that show via mplayer. The quality of my playback is not as good as when viewing in the myth player. Below are the options I'm using -- if anyone else is using mplayer to playback hdef recordings, I'd be interested in knowing what options you're using. Also, is anyone else experiencing this problem? For 720P recordings I play back at 720p resolution using:

I have seen the same thing with my R5A16 setup and an FX5200 card with HDTV recordings from my firewire Motorola 6200 setup.

It would preview fine in the Watch Recordings menu, but the Frontend would bomb out when you went to play it.

When it happens, I just use Xine to play the .nuv file.

Seems like a little corruption in the file.

Did you run commercial cutting on these shows by any chance?

Richp, thanks for replying. It's good to know that I am not the only one having the problem. I am not using commerical cutting. Funny that you mention xine -- after I put my post up I decided to try xine and I found that it a ton easier to setup...
