As some of you may know from my prior postings, I am able to get the nvidia 6629 driver to work for 1080i playback, but it won't work for me on version 8178. At the same time, I believe that some others have had success with version 8178. Initially I was focused on potential modeline issues, but given how many different modelines I've tried, and the fact that I have one that works on 6629, I suspect it is something else.

At one point I diff'ed the "XFree86.0.log" log file generated under 6629 vs. 8178 and the main difference is that under 6629 the log declares the clock range as "12.00 to 400.0 Mhz"; on 8178 it decalres the clock range as "12.00 to 350.00 MHZ".

To continue the diagnostic process, I am requesting your help. If you are using the nvidia 8178 driver successfully with a 1080i modeline, I would appreciate your replying to this post with the following informaton:

1. What kind of display you are driving (Samsung 50" DLP in my case).

2. How you are connected (VGA in my case).

3. A copy of your 1080i modeline.

4. Which card you are using (FX5200 in my case).

5. The output from executing the command
Code:
grep "Clock range" /var/log/XFree86.0.log

On my system, under 6629 I see
Quote:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Clock range: 12.00 to 400.00 MHz

Thank you for your help!

Marc

I can drive my Sanyo 28'' crt (native 1080i) over VGA->Component with the standard 1080i modelines I already showed you (59.94 and 60hz), using a 5200 AGP 128 Mb with the 8178 drivers, fyi. I also show 12-350 hz as the clock range in my log file (Xorg.0.log, because I upgraded from XFree86). Did you try my earlier suggestion of commenting out glx support? Also, have you tried any other resolutions like 640x480 or 720p to see if they had the same problems under 8178, or is it exclusive to 1080i?

misterflibble, thanks for replying. Yup -- I tried commenting out glx support -- no impact. 720p works fine. I ran another round of experiments today and I re-confirmed that none of the follow modelines work with 8178 (they all work under 6629 for me):

Quote:
# ModeLine "1920x1080" 74.184 1920 1960 2008 2200 1080 1084 1094 1124 interlace
# ModeLine "1920x1080" 74.176 1920 1960 2016 2200 1080 1082 1088 1125 Interlace
# modeLine "1920x1080" 74.25 1920 1960 2016 2200 1080 1082 1088 1125 Interlace
# ModeLine "1920x1080" 74.175824 1920 1960 2008 2200 1080 1084 1094 1125 interlace

In terms of the modelines you referenced -- I've tried those modelines w/ out success in 8178. They do work in 6629 and are in the set I listed above.

I strongly suspect there is something else besides the modeline I need to address...

Marc -- I'm running a Pioneer PRO-510HD projection set at 1080i. I used the 6629 drivers for a long time due to the "split screen" bug of the later nVidia drivers. I have changed to the latest driver, however, and it seems to work for me.

I am driving my set through a VGA connection, and I have only one modeline:
Code:
ModeLine       "ATSC-1080-59.94i" 74.2 1920 1960 2016 2200 1080 1082 1088 1125 interlace

When I try your magic grep, the reponse is:
Code:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Clock range:  12.00 to 350.00 MHz

It's been awhile, but I'm pretty sure the card is a 5200 variant. With all the computers I have around here I get a little confused at times, but I'm pretty sure the only 6600 card I own is in a different system.

Liv2cod:

Thanks for replying. I tried your modeline and same result -- works with 6629, but not with 8178. I'd like to get a copy of your XF86Config-4 and XFree86.0.log files so I can diff them against mine. I've PM'ed you with my email address so you can send them as an attachment -- thanks.
