With all the posts from people asking if their system would work with HD, I was thinking how nice it would be if there were some 5 minute sample HD movied available for testing.

I went looking and found this. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/window ... wcase.aspx

Unfortunately they are all in windows media player 9 format.

Are there any sample videos I could download that would be exactly what I would get from an off air hd stream? This would be perfect for deciding on wether to go HD before spending the money on a tuner.

It could also be a good trouble shooting tool for those having decoding problems. Imagine if instead of someone reporting my video sucks, they say 1 minute 3 seconds into the test video, the left side of the screen is piexelated. Would also be cool if there were some way to get a screen shot.

this was recently mentioned in a thread right here. I believe it's pchdtv.com that has a sample.

Thanks but no thanks. Why even link to that stuff? KnoppMyth doesn't support playing WMV.

I only mentioned the M$ link as an example of what I was looking for. Thats why I noted that they are all wmv.

I downloaded the file from pchdtv and it played on my laptop with no more than 60% cpu usage? It did not look very good either.

Is this because I'm playing it using WMP?

I'll try it out on the knoppmyth box when I get home.

I don't know. I don't use WMP.

well if you saw the whole picture then wmp was resizing it, because I don't know of a laptop on the market that has a 1920x1080 display, so if it is played in all it's glory it really should be larger than your desktop.

I think I found some better samples here at http://www.heise.de/ct/ftp/spezial.shtml. It's all German but if you search for sample you will see 4 files.

I hope that one of these files is representative of off air HDTV.

What you have to be weary of is that when you play these videos you are using something like mplayer or xine, but the TV component uses MythTV's built in TV application.

I suspect that this will may give you some indication, but I would not take it as gospel.

I know WMP is of the evil spawn but it is the only media player I had access to at work.

I had to follow up on my earlier comment about the test video from pchdtv not looking that great. When I watched it at work it was a recording of a PBS show with a couple singing on stage. When I got home, I played it using mplayer and it was a scene on a passenger train.

I guess this is a stream with multiple video signals in it.

The good news, my pc was 50 to 60 percent idle while playing back any of these videos.

The bad news, I don't know how to get the mythtv player to play them.

If I remember right, the HD-WMV format is compressed with some funky MS compression alg. I looked in to the format before, and to play a movie in 1080i requires a minium of a 3Ghz cpu with 2 gigs of ram.

I know this is not correct. I play 1080i from my mythtv box with a 3.0G and 512M ram with cpu to spare, and I'm not using any hardware acceleration.

That's requirements for WMV HD 1080p, not 1080i... big difference.
