Post subject: | Nvidia FX-5200 8178 driver - Constant X Windows Flicker |
I have an FX-5200 using VGA out to a 720P native projector. It works great but I'm seeing a flicker. I see it as soon as X windows come on and it persists with MythFrontend loads as well as when I'm watching TV or recorded shows. I've done some searches and saw a Xsecrets said to adjust the flicker settings in nvidia-settings, but I don't have anything in my nvidia-settings that indicates that it would help with flicker. Any Ideas? Thanks EtherNut I have pasted my XF86Config4 file below for reference. My understanding is that the "flicker" settings are for svideo out and don't apply to vga out -- probably good if someone else can confirm this. I quickly skimmed your XF86Config-4 file: 1. I don't see where you've added a modeline for 720p. You're going to need to define one that is appropraite for your device. There are a lot of published modelines out there -- might try "googling" for one that is appropraite for your device. Based on the file you posted, I'm guess that you are actually driving the projector at 1024x768. 2. You'll need to add a reference to that modeline to the 24-bit display section towards the end of the file. 3. I found Ben Johnson’s post at http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... vidia+6629 an excellent source of useful information. 4. I posted some notes on my configuration at http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=8497 -- my notes are the 4th posting on this tread. Hope this helps. marc |

I get an annoying flicker apparently due to a ground loop between the computer's ground and the well-grounded shield of the incoming antenna cable. I've 95% resolved it by using two matching transformers (such as Radio Shack part number 15-1140) attached back-to-back. Connect the parallel twin-lead sides together, leaving the F-connector ends available. Then, using a short chunk of coax cable with F-connectors, put it inline just before your computer. I clipped the spade terminals off the matching transformers and soldered the ends directly to each other, and used heat-shrink tubing (electrical tape would work, too) to keep each side from shorting against the other. An alternative is to use something like one RS 15-1140 and one RS 15-1253, so you don't need a short chunk of coax cable - just screw the leads of one to the screw terminals of the other. I didn't go that way since the F connector on the RS 15-1253 doesn't mate well with the short F connector on my HD-3000 (worked okay on my PVR-250, though). Laramie |

A quick way to check for ground-loop-induced flicker (GLIF???) is to see if it goes away when you disconnect the antenna (or cable company) cable from your computer. If that makes it go away, build yourself an isolation transformer per my previous note. Laramie |

Thanks for the reply! It turned out to be my missing modeline.
