What's the format of a MythTV .nuv file that came from OTA HDTV recording using a pcHDTV HD-3000 ATSC tuner card?

Should be whatever's coming across the airwaves, but what is that?

In the past I've been able to play .nuv files on a Windoze box that were recorded on my MythTV box with my previous setup using a PVR-250, as the files were mpeg2 in disguise.

Windoze doesn't know what to do with an OTA HD recording I made with my rebuilt MythTV and HD-3000, which I believe to be 1080i. I'd like to be able to view it on my Windoze box since its the only box I've got with a 1920x1200 display.

It is exactly what is transmitted. It is MPEG2. Nevermind the extension.

hdtv is MPEG2 TS the default for the pvr cards in mythtv versions before 0.19 was MPEG2 PS that may be why windows reads one and not the other with built in codecs. As of mythtv 0.19 MPEG2 PS is deprecated and pvr/hdtv will both be MPEG2 TS.

To expand a little on Xsecret's reply...

MPEG2 can be wrappered as either a "transport stream" (TS) or "program stream" (PS). The PS is the same format as used by DVD players and is commonly handled by codecs. The TS form is newer and many, if not most, codecs don't handle it directly.

You can convert TS to PS but you often wind up with the audio channel deviating from the video. Google "hdtvtompeg2" for one such program on Windoze.

Thanks for the input, folks.

After I downloaded some new codecs (a free evaluation package) to my Windoze box, Windoze Media Player now is happy with the 1080i .nuv file that I recorded. All 7 GB of it (about an hour). Looks pretty good, too.

Of course the content isn't any better, but the picture and sound are good.
