I have comcast cable and an HD5000. I set up the HD5000 as a DVB DTV capture card with DVB Card Number: 0. I took the rest of the defaults in the Capture Card Setup.

I left Input Connections with the defaults and did not point the connection to a Zap2It channel listing. I stop mythtv-backend....then I run atscscan on every frequence list I can find:

Code:
atscscan -A 2 /usr/local/share/dvb/scan/atsc/us-Cable-Standard-center-frequencies-QAM256 > ~/channels.conf
atscscan -A 2 /usr/local/share/dvb/scan/atsc/us-Cable-HRC-center-frequencies-QAM256 > ~/channels.conf
atscscan -A 2 /usr/local/share/dvb/scan/atsc/us-Cable-IRC-center-frequencies-QAM256 > ~/channels.conf
atscscan -A 2 /usr/local/share/dvb/scan/atsc/us-ATSC-center-frequencies-8VSB > ~/channels.conf
atscscan -A 2 /usr/local/share/dvb/scan/atsc/us-Cable-EIA-542-HRC-center-frequencies-QAM256 > ~/channels.conf
atscscan -A 2 /usr/local/share/dvb/scan/atsc/us-Cable-EIA-542-IRC-center_frequencies-QAM256 > ~/channels.conf
atscscan -A 2 /usr/local/share/dvb/scan/atsc/us-NTSC-center-frequencies-8VSB > ~/channels.conf
atscscan -A 2 /usr/local/share/dvb/scan/atsc/us-NY-TWC-NYC > ~/channels.conf
atscscan -A 2 /usr/local/share/dvb/scan/atsc/us-PA-Philadelphia > ~/channels.conf
atscscan -A 2 /usr/local/share/dvb/scan/atsc/us-Cable-Standard-center-frequencies-QAM256 > ~/channels.conf

I let all of the scans run completely through and all I get are responses like this:

Code:
WARNING: >>> tuning failed!!!
>>> tune to: 57000000:QAM_256 (tuning failed)

Did I miss a step somewhere? My regular cable here is HRC...I don't know if that even matters in this.

While scanning, it says:

Code:
scanning /usr/local/share/dvb/scan/atsc/us-Cable-IRC-center-frequencies-QAM256
using '/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0' and '/dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0'

Is it using the right adapter information?

that is the information for the first dvb adapter. So it should be right unless you have something else grabbing the first spot.

Ed3120,

I'm in central NJ(Monroe) with Comcast too...I have a HD3000 which is installed in my backend but not setup for QAM.

I will probably have sometime tomorrow to run these scans as you did and see if I get anything.

Hope this can help.

Rich

Using my HD3000 and running this command:

Code:
atscscan -A 2 /usr/local/share/dvb/scan/atsc/us-Cable-Standard-center-frequencies-QAM256 > ~/channels.conf

I was able to get many channels dumped into channels.conf...of course with Comcast none of them have names. Here is a snippet:

Code:
[0009]:555000000:QAM_256:0:2753:9

Using Xine(Mplayer wouldn't work for me) I was able to tune to 2 channels. NJN and some other non HD channel.

I have a head cold today, so when my head clears up I will read through all of the posts regarding QAM and try to get this channels.conf sorted and working in Knoppmyth for Central NJ Comcast.

ed don't take offence if this seems like a dumb question. I don't know what you unix skills are like. Did you look in ~/channels.conf after running this command each time. The > in each command redirects standard output to that file. That would leave standard error coming to the output. That is all you saw was the errors. Also the > does not append to a file, it overwrites it. So it is possible that your command "atscscan -A 2 /usr/local/share/dvb/scan/atsc/us-Cable-HRC-center-frequencies-QAM256 > ~/channels.conf" generated the file you needed, and all the subsequent commands overwrote it with an empty file.

Since you said your cable is HRC, run just that command then cat ~/channels.conf.

Ok, that was the problem. I made a basic unix mistake and assumed that the information echoed back to the screen was the same as the information in the channels.conf file. I was just reading my scrollback and saw nothing but errors. I didn't realize that > separates the good from the bad.

Thank you very much for pointing that out!!

Could you tell me how many and what channels you wound up picking up over qam with Comcast NJ?

Certainly...

I was able to pick up the 6 network channels (CBS,NBC,ABC,FOX,WB,PBS) and ESPN for some reason, but not Discovery HD, or either of the INHD channels (which I really wanted).

I can watch Discovery/INHD1/INHD2 on my DCT6200 cable box, so I'm wondering if maybe those channels will come through if I connected to the box via firewire.

This is what I get for these channels via firewire:

DiscoverHD (channel 205 for me) doesn't work via firewire (although it used too...so it maybe program dependant)

Just tried INHD1 (206) via LiveTV and the whole PC locked...so let me try just recording from it...ok 206 seems to be hit or miss...works sometimes.

INHD2 207 didn't work at all.

At one point in the past I was able to record HBOHD, but that hasn't worked in awhile either.

Would you mind sharing your working channels.conf with me??

Thanks...look forward to getting that from you and I will let you know how the quality compares between QAM and firewire.
