Can all of a 1080i signal be displayed on a standard television? I just got my HD-5000 last week and I'm still trying to get it looking right. All of my channels broadcasting in 1080i cut of a portion of the right side. No adjustment of aspect override will bring it into view.

Before I waste too much more time on the impossible, is this even theoretically possible?

should be possible. I was displaying all my hd stuff at 640x480 through svid on my TV till I got my hdmi -> dvi cable. It was on an hdtv, but I was only sending the signal in sd, so it should be the same on a sdtv.

That is exactly what I am trying to do. I want to display HD via S-video to my TV.

Were you able to display the entire video or did you live with having the some of the content off the edge of the screen?

Were there any tricks that you remember to get it to display? Would this involve any X settings, such as TVStandard?

I was trying to set TVStandard to HD480i last night but I could not get a working modeline. I have tried every variation of 480x480, 640x480 and 800x600 with it set to NTSC-M and the video is always cut off on the right. I have also tried setting the aspect override and w key. I played with the seperate video for gui / video but I realy didn't understand it, all I ended up with was extra wide video and more of it cut off on the left.

Any input on this would be greatly appreciated, even if it is just a hint as to what area I should be looking in.

Doh! I just re-read your post. I missed that you were displaying to a HDTV. I think the problem that I'm seeing will be specific to 4:3 TVs.

On your TV with S-Video or HDMI cable, do you still have to set aspect ratio each time you change the channel, or does the TV pick up the change and adjust accordingly?

well when I was using svid it would show all hdtv content letterboxed. Now that I am using dvi I just use the 16:9 aspect ratio and everything seems to work properly. I do get black bars on the side if I have sd content recorded on an hd source though.

note that yes the 4:3 content is stretched, but doesn't bother me enough to try to infuriate the GF with switching aspect ratio's all the time.

I know what you mean. I did map the blue key on my remote to the w key so I could easily switch aspect ratios. I think if I never point it out to my wife, she won't notice.

Follow up.

A member on the mythtv users mail list, reccomended that I use a 720x480 modeline. This helped some. I now am able to use the 16:9 stretch aspect override and get most of the 16:9 picture on the screen. The best part is it nolonger cuts off a bunch of the right side. It cuts some off of the left and some off of the right.

I thought of something on the drive in this morning. I might try another modeline that is 16:9 based on the 640 width. That would be 640x360.

I'll report back the results.

I've got a system with dual HD-3000's and an MSI Nvidia 6200-TC connected to my analog TV via S-Video.

I've never done any configuration to get my HD recordings to display properly. 1080i and 720p signals scale correctly for me.

I'm sure I'll have some work to do once I get an HDTV.

This is driving me crazy.

jimdoc, are you sure you are not loosing any content on the left or the right. The lose could be subtle. The next time you are viewing a HD program, pause it, and press the w key and see if any of the displays show more content than you are seeing. There are 7 different settings.

Could you please post you XF86Config-4 file.

mschlott, I think I'm having the same problem as you.

I'm definitely losing a decent size chunk of content on the right side of my SD tv. I tried the different modes with 'w' and none of them modes corrects the issue.
I used the standard XF86Config-4(nvidia version) without any modification.

It's quite noticeable when a commercial comes on and the 4:3 content is (for lack of a better description) right justified. :)

What's REALLY odd is that CBS and NBC are offset to the right as described, but ABC is centered correctly.

The offset seems to be dependant on the transmission for me. HD the right side would be cut off. SD digital would be centerd.

I was able toget the HD centered by using a 720x480 modeline.

Sorry for the delay, I've been fighting getting spdif/Dolby 5.1 working on my nforce4 mb working (I do have it working now) on my R5B7 system. I had it working on R5A26 but didn't take good notes, so it took me a while.

When viewing 4:3 content on a 1080i signal (local CBS) using 16:9 zoom mode, my image is not cropped on either the left or right side. When viewing 16:9 content I don't notice any 'extra' content in any of the other modes.

There could be a subtle overscan that I don't notice, but I compared the output of a 1080i HD broadcast displayed on my SD TV using S-Video to playback via VLC on my pc and I don't notice differences (other than resolution).

As a little clarification, I actually use the 'dragon' install. My system is very similar to the dragon.

I enter "dragon screen=800x600" at the boot screen. I've never modified the XF86Config-4 file. But here's the contents of my file.
