After upgrading to R5F27 I was unable to play DVDs....did the pineapple thing(I think) and now I have video but no audio.

If I switch from the internal player to Xine, I get audio and video but the video play back is horrible and I receive error messages about too many dropped frames. Video playback on the internal player is real smooth just no audio.

I have tried using aumix to adjust audio levels during DVD playback but that doesn't help.

I am using pvr350 audio out to on board sound card audio in which works fine for tv etc.

Code:
$ aplay -l

You may not be missing anything. I worked on creating a DVD over the weekend that contained audio and found that if I played the DVD through windows media player the audio didn't work, tried VLC and the audio worked fine. Tried my DVD player, no audio, tried my wife's new portable DVD player, audio worked. Tried my KnoppMyth box (xine) worked fine.

I have to do some research to find out exactly what is going on, but it may be something to do with the DVD itself not necessarily any settings.

I know this is not a solution merely something I have found that relates to your problem.

Don't know if this will help, but when I play DVDs on my system, the audio output is through my soundcard, rather than the PVR-350 (which is where my audio output is when watching TV or recording playback). Since I haven't looked into which settings to adjust to correct this, I just plug my receiver into my soundcard output, and voila, I can hear.

Good Luck,
Craig

Thank you both for taking time to reply.

Yeah my speakers are setup to use the onboard sound card. If there is any audio coming out of the pvr350 it gets redirected into the sound card via an external cable and then out the speakers.

I will keep looking into what might be going on in the meantime.

It woudln't be a codec issue if I am getting sound with xine would it? I understand that things were a little more conservative in what was bundled in the base install this time around with R5F27. I think I read that the internal player is based on ffmpeg though

I don't know if this will help or not but I found out what my problem was when I was not getting audio on the DVDs I personally created. I was using Nero Vision to create the DVD and had the audio encoding set to Auto, what I found was that the audio created on the DVD was mpg audio and it didn't work.

I have now created the DVD again and this time set the audio to AC3 and found that the audio works. I was actually able to recreate this problem on my windows box, but creating an ISO of the DVD (prior to burning) and trying to play the DVD through Windows Media Player. In the early versions of the DVD I got no audio, with the new DVD I get audio.

Yeah the sound issue is occurring with purchased DVDs( this one happened to be Zoolander), but that is a good tip about personally created DVDs.
