I'm about ready to install KM on a new machine, and I'm
wondering what people are recommending as a filesystem for the
"big" partition where the recordings are stored?

I'm currently using the default ext3, but it's clearly not up
to the task. Everytime I delete a recording, my machine has
seizures for the next minute or two. If I'm watching a
recording when a large file gets deleted (e.g. at the
completion of a trascode job), the playback will periodically
pause for seconds at a time. Sometimes the playback fails
completely and exits back to the menu screen.

If I wait until the delete operation finishes, I can resume
playback without problems. I suspect that deleting files also
corrupts recordings that are in-progress.

So, what filesystems are people using to avoid this?

I use jfs because of the performance. The disadvantage of jfs is that you cannot easily decrease the size. You can increase it if you are using logical volumes.

Some may advocate reiserfs here because the performance is similar for deleting files, however I believe there is a very large amount of time required to mount a large reiserfs partition.

In the future, the ext4 file system may be the one of choice.

I am quite sure you know about this but here it is anyway.

For me this makes Ext3 usable. It take this takes away about 96% of the problems for me. This only works if you are deleting from within your frontend / backend. If you are using Webmin or another method you are back to your two minute wait. If this is still giving you troubles post again and I will give you another tweak that may help you out. How fast of machine are you using?

I use XFS for the myth partition.

I switched to XFS after reading a lot of recommendations on the Gossamer MythTv threads. If you are a high-def user, XFS is the way to go. Deletes are virtually instant. I've always been pleased with the switch.

You can do further "fine tuning" of your filesystem by using multiple drives. I have a drive formatted as ext3 where I have my "/" and "/myth" partitions. Another drive formatted as xfs holds /myth/tv and still another drive, also xfs, holds /myth/video (I rip all my DVDs to "perfect" ISO quality). I have 400 + 750 + 750G of storage for the three filesystems.

It works for me!

I've seen the same. XFS is great with HD files.

I forgot to mention that I have slow delete enabled. It did
drag out the process so it takes longer, but apparently it's
still deleting blocks too fast and too large (for my system).

Apparently it's not slow enough.
