I have a spare shutte sn42g2 box with a duron 2500 proc, 512 mb of Ram and a 120GB HD. I was wondering if the PVR350 would be my best choice for a tv tuner.

I will be connected to a cable reciever and using an IR Blaster to control the Cable box so the tuner part doesnt bother me. If there was a good card that just had an svideo input and an svideo output then that would probably be ideal. Will i have to use the tuner on channel 3? Also if i record everything in MPEG2 is there a function in MythTV to convert them to MPEG4 during Idle time to decrease file sizes?

I currently have a ReplayTV but I am looking to save the $12/month as well as increase functionality.

Thanks

I don't think the 350 was ever labeled as the best choice.... I'd only recommend the 350 to those that are short on horsepower and want to use it for it's TV out. You should note that just becuase the 350 and TV out, that doesn't make it a video card. Output other than MPEG-2 will see performance hits.

MythTV doesn't have anything built inbuilt to transcode to MPEG-4. However, scripts are available (search the wiki and the forum) that you can use. These script can automatically be set to run as a job after recording, etc. There is also nuvexport...

So in my situation where I don't necesarily need the tuner, what would be my best and most cost effective choice for the video in and out?

I've no experience with tuner less capture cards, so I won't speak about them. I see no reason why a PVR-150 and an video card based on a nVidia chipset wouldn't work for you... As if you are starting to stray off-topic, please start another thread or search the forum...
