hi,

i have recorderd a tv-show with KM R5E50 and gave in the option: flag commercials.

after the recording was finished (2 hour program) the machine worked a long time to 'flag' the recording; at the end of which a small icon shows the recording is flagged.

nice...

but what does this mean now for the rest:
when i look the show with KM itself, will the commercials have become invisible then?

and what when i transfer the recording to an iso-file, to burn it on a dvd...
will the show on dvd, played in a standalone dvd-player, be without the commercials?

thanks for info.

What are the hardware specs on your machine? I haven't timed it but I believe my athlon 1900+ (1.6 GHz) backend takes about 10-15 min to flag commercials on a 60 minute show I think. You can either watch it go on mythweb or you can look in your /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log to see how long it took.

Here is an example from my logs recording a 2-hour movie:
Code:
16:01:24.316 Commercial Flagging Starting for xxx recorded from channel xxx
...
...
16:20:05.585 commflag: Commercial Flagging Finished: xxx recorded from channel xxx: 10 commercial break(s)

So it took about 19 minutes to do it which is roughly 190 fps: 2 h x 60 min x 60 sec x 30 fps = 216,000 frames and you know it took 19 min or 19/60 sec = 1,140 sec. So the math is simply total frames / time to flag or 216000/1140=189.5 or rounded, 190 fps.

Mythweb actually reports the fps on recently completed jobs if you look at the status page for the backend under the job queue: (http://mythtv/mythweb/status)

No, myth just marks where it thinks they start and stop - it is a lossless process and makes making no edits to the captured recording at all. It's up to you to manually skip them (q and z keys if I'm remembering correctly) or switch on auto commercial skip.

Again myth isn't editing the video at all, just flagging it so I believe the commercials will come with it... that said some of the burning scripts may take the cut points into account and skip them; I have no experience using them.

These threads contain the basics of editting cut lists and why you want to do it.

To answer your questions...
if you watch the recording with the skip commercial option enabled, it will skip the sections of the recording that were detected as commercials.

It's not perfect though. The commercial detection is better with some shows than others.

If you burn it to dvd or an iso file, and check the checkbox that says "Use Cutlist", it will save the recording to the iso file or the dvd without the commercials at all.

If you don't use the "Use Cutlist", the commercials will remain.

You can also adjust the cutlist points yourself, as tjc's links will show.

If you use the cutlist and run transcode on the recording, it will remove the commercials without having to burn it to an iso file or dvd.
