I have several power (but very loud) servers that run in the garage. Most of the time they are idle and it would be cool if I could leverage them to perform the processing for HD video playback. The rest of the house has access to these servers through gigabit LAN.

Is there a way to stream HD video from the servers (Dual Xeon @ 2.8 Ghz running Vmware ESX) to a front end box?

Sure, but you're not using the "power servers" to do any of the
"processing for HD video playback", you're just using them as
file-servers. All the processing happens on the box with the
video spigot on it.

True as grante says, but can I suggest getting a nice, quiet, thin hardware client capable of rendering HD media? I've been using a Buffalo Link Theater, with decent results.
