My front end process has run amuck.

I tried to identify the process to kill:

Code:
root@mythtvhost:~# pgrep -fl front
3899 mythfrontend --logfile /var/log/mythtv/mythfrontend.log
20208 mythfrontend

I killed 20208 but did not see an effect. I then killed 3899 and a couple seconds later the errant front end process disappeared from the monitor. Does killing 3899 cause any problems?

Zap all of X, and it'll re-start

Code:
pkill -f X11

I usually use the keys CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE this restarts X.

But obviously (isn't hindsight beautiful :P ) if the Frontend process is running amuck like you said, this probably won't work.

Hi,

Please clarify, "running amuck" ? I don't recall ever the frontend per se having issues. Usually it is something under that is controlled by the frontend, ie, select music, watch tv, archive.

Some system specs would be helpful also for if you are being a tightwad on memory (~256), small swap, small drive, slow cpu then often times there are long delays as your KM box struggles to figure out where to put something so it can do the task requested.

pkill xinit or pkill mythfrontend work for me. i have to kill my frontend when it freezes due to rewinding mpeg video without pausing first. i really wish that bug would get resolved already!

Hi MJL,

Amuck means that the front end has frozen up and is non responsive to inputs.

Although the system configuration is posted (as of last night) in my signature as Dual Xeon 2.8 with 2.5GB RAM, at the time of the posting the system config was a Dell 4100 with 384 MB of RAM.

All,
Kudos to everyone who has provided suggestions!
