I just upgraded to from the R5D series to the R5F series, which takes me from mythtv 0.19 to mythtv 0.20.2. 0.20.2 introduces automatic detection of interlace mode, which seems like a great idea, but in practice it frequently mis-detects the interlaced nature of the video. This results in jerky video playback.

Has anyone found a way to disable the automatic detect feature so I can force bob2x deinterlacing? I know I can do it from the menu during playback, but I'd rather just shut it off permanently.

Note: I edited this entry about 1 hour after I originally posted it to reduce the number of "clicks" required on the remote from 2 to 1.

I asked the same question over on the mythtv users list -- the reply is that there isn't any way to disable this. In my case, all of my SD ADS (Analogue Digital Simulcast) recordings are treated as progressive scan material, resulting in very choppy video. To correct requires 8 button presses while watcing the video. This is very painful since most of my SD recordings have this problem. The ideal scenario would be to make this configurable, but as a work around I've added the following to my /home/mythtv/.mythtv/lircrc file:
Code:
begin
    prog = mythtv
    button = red
#   Key sequence to turn auto interlace detection
#   off while watch a video.
    config = M,Up,Up,Right
end
begin
    prog = mythtv
    button = red
#   Key sequence to turn auto interlace detection
#   off while watch a video.
    config=Up,Up,Return
end

Now I can force the front-end to deinterlace the video with a single click of the red button on my happauge remote control. I hope others find this useful as a work-around.

Excellent tip Marc, you may want to be careful though as there is currently no KnoppMyth release that contains 0.20.2. I believe it will be in the next release though and then this tip will be extremely important.

Girkers, you make a good point. This should work for anyone that is using Cecil's instructions to upgrade an existing install for schedules direct. I don't know if it would work with an existing R5E* or R5F1 without that upgrade. It does not apply to anything earlier.

The easiest way to tell is to hit the menu bottom while watching a recording. Hit the "up" arrow twice. If you are now on a menu entry labeled "video scan", this change should work for your installation.
