so imagine how suprised i was to find that my idiot parents were watching TV and they left the "watch tv " on... didnt bother to exit to main menu.

so i go to check on the box to day and im suprosed ot see that every show that was on last night (on the lifetime channel.. dont ask) was recorded...

sooo then im playing around with a new theme todya and i go to watch tv to try out the OSD part... and it lok sbeautifull but MADtv was on... i was watcing for maby 2 min just to get the feel of the OSD... and i go back to check on my recordings, and shure enough MADtv was there...

sooo what im pretty shure is happening is my tv buffer is getting dumped to a recording... i dont want this... how can i fix it 9i hope its just some stupid setting i accidently modified when i was tired)

To "fix" this you would have to downgrade to an older version of mythtv. This is the new designed behavor for mythtv .19 and all future versions. There is no reason for you to "not want this". Don't worry about the disk filling up, mythtv will automatically deleate the "live TV" recordings first when it needs more room.

well, it is kinda annoying just to see my recordings list cluttered up w/ all the shows that i only watched 1/2 of...

ill jsut have to make a filter for recorded vs live tv.
but there is no way to trun it off?

You can change the display/group settings so that you never see any livetv recordings unless you want to. They'll still be there, but you won't care.

This was actually one of the big enhancements in 0.19. All recordings are now handled uniformly using the same mechanisms. This is a really good thing. It used to drive me nuts when I'd be 15-90 minutes behind real time (to give myself a commercial skip buffer or other priorities came up) and the scheduler would want to grab the tuner for a (non-overlapping) recording. I missed the end of more stinking movies that way...

The new behaviour lets me keep watch the recording that it had already made anyway. It's expiry behaviour for these "temporary recordings" is also really well behaved and quite tunable. They get deleted by preference if you need space, they get deleted if the count goes over a certain threshhold, they get deleted after a day or two regardless. I think it even prioritizes the deleteion of really small ones (like from channel surfing) to prevent clutter. Oh and there's a check box somewhere under TV setup that hides them so you don't have to look at them in the list of all recordings.

i only have 120 gigs (~107 free) and space is something i need to watch constantly, but if theese get deleted after a day or so then i guess its not a problem... but do they get transcoded and commercial flagged just like the full length recordings?

Why do you have to constantly watch the free space? MythTV will automatically deleate recordings when it needs more disk space. You as the user don't have to do anything. Have you read the mythtv documentation? All this stuff is explained there.

i know that....
but on average there are ~7-10 shows recorded a day (and at 1 gig per 1/2 hour) that fills up quick... and some shows i like to keep longer than others...

As I mentioned, it will remove the "live" precordings first if it needs space. They're really a non-issue as far as stuff like that goes.

Agian MythTV already has a feature built into it that do just that. You as the user can set diffferent priorities for each program, so that MythTV can correctly choose which recordings should be deleated first when the disk is full.

Personally I think this is a big bonus since sometimes you'll be watching a show and be halfway through it and have to leave. When you hit the record button, it includes what you've already watched in the recording. It even knows what time that show started so for example, you're 30 minutes into a movie, it saves that first 30 minutes and appends the rest onto it. When you get back to watch it, voila, you have the entire show.

Previous behavior, when you hit record, it'd save that point forward. I wasn't aware that .19 will go back and erase live TV recordings when space got too low. I figured there was some mechanism to handle that, it only makes sense.

You can also set MythTV to expire Live TV recordings every day. That is it will expire any Live TV recording that is 1 day old without having to wait for MythTV to clean up space before starting a recording. This really dosn't matter much as another poster pointed out that the oldest Live TV recordings are overwritten to make room for scheduled recordings.

and you can view the auto-expire list in Information Center -> System Status -> Auto Expire List. Then you can see what's due to expire next, and watch it before it goes.
