Post subject:  Commercial flag and Transcoding.........Isn't.

Hi folks:

Well, I made some recordings of a fabulous documentary series with R5C7. As I understand it,
in order to remove commercials, I could then manually tell Myth to commercial flag
the recordings, and then once that's done, to transcode them to cut out the commercials
marked by the automatic flagging. (I didn't want the system to auto transcode immediately
after recording, as the episodes were back to back, and I wasn't sure auto-transcoding
might interfere with the recording process.)

I wanted to manually commflag and then transcode the commercials. I'm sure I've probably
done something wrong, so could you please help a poor newbie?

After the recordings were complete, I went into the "Watch Recordings" screen, and selected
the recording I wanted to commercial flag. Under "Job options", I selected Commercial Flag.
Eventually, under the "Information Center" "Job Status" screen, those recordings were
labelled as "finished". I then went back to the "Watch Recordings" screen, and selected
"Transcode recording". Again, it seemed to work, as eventually, under the "Job Status" screen
in "Information Center" it eventually read "finished transcoding" etc. etc. [On a side note,
the job status screen did not seem to update itself dynamically-I had to go to other screens
and then return to it in order to see the process progressing.] However, when I then went
to view the recordings again, the commercials were still there.

Did I do this wrong, or should it have removed the commercials?

Thanks in advance, and thanks once again to Cecil, Dale, the Testers, and everyone else
who works so thanklessly on this great project.

I know where you are coming from. I spent a month or two telling my girlfriend that, it should just 'cut the adverts', but initially I struggled too.

What you need to do is make sure the cutlist is loaded. The button for this is 'z'. Do this once the recording has started.

I never used the automatic detect adverts/transcode as I am a little wary of it getting it wrong - the only things i really bother about are movies, or particularly good series prior to burning to dvd.

I would start a recording, press 'e' you get the edit menu. Press 'z' and load the cut list created by Myth. Then clear the cut list by pressing 'c' then edit it manually to creating a new cut list. Then transcode.

But I'm fussy and I hate to have bits here and there, like if i leave it on automatic and the programme starts late I would end up with some of the previous programme with my advert-less transcode.

Hope this helps.

btw. It bugs me to the non-dynamic update. I've been thinking about putting some of my own themes together that are a bit more interactive... i might get around to it one day.

Ummm....okay. There seem to be so many diff. ways to cut commercials.
Not to sound unappreciative, as I'm grateful for what you've told me,
but I don't understand at all what you're talking about.

In any case, these videos have already been recorded.

Is there some way I can properly get commercial flagging and removing
commercials properly AFTER a recording has been made?

Thanks

Hi shplad,

I had hoped I had been writing in a concise manner, but on re-reading what I had written I can see how it might have been confusing. Note to self: reread what you have written.

For clarity's sake, when I said start a recording I meant start watching a previously recorded programme, then press 'e' to enter the edit mode and then press 'z' to load the cutlist... I don't know why Myth doesn't seem to load cutlist without being in edit mode, but as far as I can tell this is the case.

Then either clear cutlist and make my own using the edit functions or use the cult list myth has detected.

Once decided on your cutlist, exit out of edit mode and either pull up the onscreen menu or exit the recording and start your transcode through the main menu job options.

More sense?

Hope so.

Thanks for that. I had a hunch that was what you meant, but wasn't sure. I don't know about
using the cutlist, but I guess I'll have to learn. I'll try it soon on a recording that isn't
so precious.

Thanks again.

The beautiful thing about cut lists is you can change your mind, move them around or even wipe them all out. Seriously don't delay another minute. Sit down in front of the KM box right now. Find a recording that shows the no-$ icon (commercial marking is complete), hit enter to watch it, hit 'm' to get the menu, then enter to edit the cut list. Hit 'z' to load the commercial marks. Don't be surprised if they're not perfect. Hit page up/down to move back and forth between cut points. ... Actually before I reproduce it all go take a look at the MythTV docs. This is really much easier than it sounds.
