| Post subject: | How to update mythtv b/c cable providing shuffling channels |
My cable provider just changed the channel ordering. I have gone out to zap2it and updated to their new listings, but how do I change it within mythtv? I imagine its a few changes within the mysql database, I'm just not sure where to start. Is it simply a matter of changing the associated channel with that listing in channels table? I'm using Knoppmyth R5A30.2. Thanks. |

That far back your best bet is probably to run mythtv-setup, drop all your "Video Sources" (channel lineups), recreate those and your "Input Connections", and them run mythfilldatabase. BTW - Look and take notes before you delete, so as to make it easier to put them back the same way... Doing a backup just in case is probably also a good idea. |

thanks tjc. I guess I might as well upgrade the backend to the newest release. Question though, since all of my current recordings are *.nuv files, will they be "playable" by the newest release since it is using mpegs? I figure if I'm updating the backend, my front-end should be too. |

I've still got ".nuv" recordings from 2004 on the system and they play just fine. All that's changed is the file names and the system knows how to deal with that. Thanks again. Here's one for you, is it possible to offload the *.nuv files, do a complete install to the newest version (no upgrade, completely new), then move the *.nuv files back (I think they are in /myth/tv) and be able to play them? b/c I'm using R5A, I believe I would have to upgrade to B, then to C then to D (basically, too much other stuff going to the intermediate steps; and I'll admit laziness). I really don't care too much about the descriptions or the like, just want to have the correct names - say "Eureka - Recorded Sept 12." If so, did the directory structure change in "D" or can I simply move them back into the /myth/tv directory? Also I'm using a PVR-500 dual tuner, so hopefully I will not have any issues like the 150, 250 or 350, but then again one will see. |

You should be able to upgrade straight from R5A30 to R5D1 (or R5C7 if necessary). Just make sure you've got a good back up and go to town. Once you've got a good back up the upgrade takes all of 20-30 minutes. As for the other, a variation like that is possible if you do some surgery on your backup files to extract all the DB information about your recordings. If you don't have that, things get ugly. There's a Perl script which does a partial rebuild of the DB using just the recordings, but the results with PVR recording leaves a _LOT_ to be desired. See my "Taking advantage of the enhanced backup and restore scripts" posting here http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=10117, and the R5C7 Upgrade Hints posting mentioned above, for some discussions of the techniques involved. Writing a script to extract only the part of the backup related to recordings is on my personal "To-Do" list, but as far as I'm aware it doesn't exist today. |

well, i decided to go the incremental route. my backend is fine except that the time is all messed up. i made that when installing the UTC was correct (I'm east coast so its +5 my local). However, now that I'm in the web interface scheduling recordings, it thinks that 1200AM is 0900PM. I've tried messing around with date and tzconfig to no avail. If I change the UTC time to what it should be (its 932PM right now so thats 2132 Military + 5 = 0132 UTC if I'm not mistaken). Well I make the changes (making sure to use date "09190132" - making sure to put 19 for tomorrow - and then the schedule reads out that 2132 is 0400). I try then to set the tzconfig to Eastern and it gets worse, Monday disappears from the listings. I then try to set up date to date "09182132" and then UTC gets weird and plops out that its says that its now 1732 (532PM). I don't know what the hell is going on. |

actually i guess 2132 + 5 = 0232; regardless time is screwed on my box. only thing that works is to set date to 09190432 and the listing shows that a 9PM show is playing @ 12 Midnight for that day |

Doing it incremental increases the number of places things could go wrong. We had people upgrade from R5A22, R5A30, ... directly to R5C7 without incident. I think someone even jumped all the way from R5A16 smoothly. As for the TZ thing, see this troubleshooting page - http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=ProgramGuideIsOff It contains everything you need to do to get your clocks and TZ right and get all the daemons and DB entries sorted. |

thanks for the heads up on the info - i would have been racking my skull for while with the time issue (it's the little things that take forever). anyways, as this post has strayed from the original question, I'll ask one more - is R5D the first version to: 1) be built from the ground up (not a Knoppix remaster) 2) use xine instead of mplayer 3) save its recordings as mpegs Thanks. |

No to all of those. It's still built on the same base, I believe Cecil said R6 for that change. The other two had alrready appeared in R5C7 and possibly R5B7 or before (R5A22). |

1. All R5s have been built from the ground up. 2. MPlayer is still included. Xine is only used for DVD playback (configured out the box). 3. If you have a hardware MPEG encoder, records have always been saved as MPEG-2. While the extension may have been .nuv, it was just the extension that the MythTV folks tacked on the file. |
