SOrry but I'm not sure where to post this so i'm sorry if this is incorrect BUT i was thinkng that maybe there shouild be some kind of hardware checker when you go to install myth. Just have it check for things that you know work and identify what doesn't or is unknown to work with Myth. Have it show a list of what works, what doesn't and what its not sure of based off of what people have said works and what doesn't. Might help eliminate a munch of questions. just an idea

Why not just research before installing? (Hence the Tier 1, 2 & 3 forums)

I have done research, so far i have put about 5 hrs into research and all i ever find are, well this may work, try this even tho i have never done it myself, this should work, blah blah blah. TO take alot of guess work out of it, why not just have it do a hardware scann and it tells you if your hardware will or will not work.
WHen i install it, and do the first reboot, all i get is the blinking cursor, and there are a million reasons that i have found why i am geting that dang thing but no definate answer. this is definately not like windows i will tell you, put in the cd and install, those are teh good old days.

That could be done, but it isn't future-proof - it'd require maintenance with each release and produce false positives and false negatives constantly.
If you already have hardware, it's easy enough to try an installation. It'll take you under 30 minutes.
If you don't have hardware yet, check out what people list in Tier 1 or look at the KnoppMyth Reference Platform: http://mysettopbox.tv/KRP.html

i already do ghave hardware, im sure that mine is not working because i don't have my tv tuner card yet (its in the mail). But my idea was just a seggestion to have the program scann your hardware and let you knwo what it is for sure to work with and whats its not sure of instead of having someone spend hours of researching. And YES i know that it is put in and install, but when it doesn't work, then i guess its not that great now is it. I don't know about what it takes to make a program to work with hardware, well i mean how hard it is to keep it up to date and i am sure that it is a constant batle. But im jsut talking about a scanner, maybe some other programmers shoudl help out wiht theis program, i know that if i knew how to program i would be on it.
This was just a suggestion, i'm not trying to slam or degrade anything.
My stats are:
Asus P4C 800
2.4 GHz P4
2 WD 160 gig RAID
WD 80 Gig sata
Maxtor 20 Gig IDE
DVD RW
512 MB Corsair
Gig lan
Radeon 9600 128mb
Nothign too special like my gamer system but myth doesn't require much. My tv tuner card i am getting is a pchdtv 5500.
My ideal system is to have a mythbox by my 51 inch sony grand wega hdtv and grab info from my freeNAS system which has 1.5 tb space on it. I plan on rippin all my dvds and crap like that and having it on that. but i have to get myth to work on my system.

It's not hard to get a profile of the system hardware by probing the PCI bus (I do a similar thing for KRP detection) but again the issue is maintenance. Even if I wrote such a thing today that worked for all the Tier 1 hardware (which would require everyone in Tier 1 participating and providing me with their hardware fingerprints) it would require constant feedback and updating with every release. That's why there'd be false positives and negatives. It's really not a technical question - it's a logistics question. It's easy to code but hard to maintain. The amount of effort required is better spent on improving compatibility. Things that make it harder on you: RAID, SATA, and Radeon. Stick to IDE and nVidia, and life is easier.

One could also read the new pamphlet which has hardware recommendations and list supported tuners...

I can add that I am a bit of a Linux newbie and have found it fairly simple install (after trying the fedora version) I have even set up LVM with my SATA
drive and it works
I am still testing constantly and regularly reinstall to test different hardware and never takes more then half hour the longest part being the guide download.
Currently have installed a version under VMware just so I can create some screen shots to help other users simplify thier setups.

And if you're refering that Windows installed programs scan for supported hardware during the install phase, not all do. The only ones I know that do that is if it was packaged with a certain piece of hardware and will not run if it does not detect that hardware. Other then that it is up to the consumer to read the generic harwdware requirements on the side of the box the software came in and as cecil pointed out, read the pamphlet that MythTV has to see if your hardware is compatible...same as reading the side of a box but more in depth.
