Post subject:  Mythfilldatabase

forgive me if this question has been asked before I'm a newbie to Nythtv and the Debian distro of Linux. I've successfully loaded knoppmyth on a presario Athlon 2200 with an NVidia Geforce 4 (no tv tuner card yet, waiting for ebay) 60 gb hdd. I've got it seeing the internet, and can use the web browsing feature. The problem is mythfilldatabase doesn't seem to be working. When I checked the system status and the last runtime mythfilldatabse and next runtime are blank. The bottom of the window asks if mythfilldatabase is running. How do I tell if it's running and if it's not, how to I manually get it started?

Also My news feeds and Weather feeds are blank. How do I fix this?

Is your network connection working?

You can hit ALt-X to bring up a console window and try pinging to see if your network connection is good.

The weather is read from the weather channel, I think, although I'm not entirely positive. News feed, I don't know about.

Did you enter your userid and password for the tv scheduler web site?

You can run mythfilldatabase from the linux shell to see if it works there.

Also, look at the logfiles too. If there's an error, it should show up there.

OK, how about the rest of the zap2it setup? Are you in the US or CA? (BTW - please put some kind of minimal location in your profile so we don't have to keep bugging you about this. Even just the local broadcast video standards is a big help. e.g. - NTSC-M, PAL-G, ...)

- Did you create an account at "http://labs.zap2it.com"? A lot of people make regular zap2it accounts and miss the labs bit.

- In mythtv-setup did you configure the Video Sources correctly to use that account?

- Were you able to download the channel lineup on that same page?

- Once you do that, make sure that you have the Input Connections setup correctly, or your next question will be "They downloaded, but why don't they show up in the program guide?"

- If you need to use some other listing grabber it would help to know that. Your posting is a bit lean on details.

What host field? Be specific. Program, menu path, page, exact title...

Hi,

Do take a few minutes and browse through the documentation that is available. A good place to start may be here. http://mysettopbox.tv/pamphlet.html and if you go to the very bottom, there are some details about a data setup and a special key to help you receive a discount. However since zap2it is providing this data for free, it is a very small discount and only equal to the cost.

When you do the setup ( alt s ) there is a place for your login & password. Then press the retrieve button. The rest should be rather understandable As while you are in the setup, go through them all to just double check entries and match somthing to the tuner in the input selection.

After you are all finished esc out. Then do ( alt x ) to open a terminal and enter
$ mythfilldastabase if all is good you should see a bunch of entries reported as code 200, that is a :) code and will bring down your selected choices.

tjc, if there is ever a vote for saint hood, you get mine :)

You need to run the "mythtv-setup" utility. That's literally the name of the Unix command, From the frontend you can start it using the Alt-S key combination as a shortcut.

BTW - Without a capture card of some kind you're not going to see anything in the program guide, because there's no "input conncetion" path to the video source. If you search you should be able to find a posting by me with a SQL query which checks if there's anyhting in the corresponding tables.

OK, Looks like I'll have to wait for my Tuner card to arrive before I can move any further. thanx I'll search for the SQL query

Mythfilldatabase connects to the web site to download the program guide.

You need an account in order to download teh data. The mythtv setup does give you a place to enter your userid and password for that account, but you can enter it manually in the configuration screens later.

The account is free. They just require you to renew it every few months to limit dead accounts.

Hi,

Hate to do this to tjc, however you can "pretend" to have a tuner card and then go through all the setup stuff until your real card arrives.

In fact if you say ordered a pvr x50 card, then when you do the capture card select, chose that card. Then set up your source, I call mine creatively, RF :) and so I have some place to put the listings.

Go the 5 steps and fill in what you can. You can even make your own channel 1, make a source for Video and assign Video for the composite input once your tuner card arrives. You do that in the Channel editor and also give a freq id of 1 (page 2). Now if I wish to record or just watch something that is available on my composite input, I simply go to channel 1. I know it works for USA but I have never heard if it is valid in PAL land also.

I don't have a tuner on my laptop but I still am able to check the listings and see what may be up coming that is of interest. I disabled the menu selection for watching tv so I don't accidently have it go nuts trying to get me a picture with imaginary hardware. It will come back after a minute or so anyway.

When your real card arrives, it will re-open the setup screen and all you should have to do is "review" your settings.
