My video card has a small fan on it. The fan makes the most annoying noise. So tonight I replaced it with another very low end model sans fan.

I don't use the video card at all, I use the composite out on my PVR-350.

So after I reboot the frontend won't start automagically and gdm is spewing errors. When I start the frontend from an ssh session tho, up it comes.

What's going on? I surmise that whatever video card you want to use has to handle the bare minimum that the TV can handle?

Your comments are appreciated.

Thanks,

Abby

Do you have a monitor plugged in to the video card? Does it show an error message on the monitor? What brand and model video cards are you talking about (tell us about both old and new). If you can ssh in did you check the logs in /var/logs for errors?

The original card which whines is a 64 meg nVidia model with only RGB out (DB-15 connector). The replacement is a 4 meg (very old) card, no idea which model.

I'm really familiar with unix but not so great with X. So I think this is a very basic issue.

Thanks for your help,

Abby

Did you change the drivers and the configuration for the new card?

You didn't say whether you did or not. Linux doesn't automatically allow for it, as far as I know.

Hi,
Most of your answers are in the list you posted.
card should be Cirrus Logic GD 5446
with address of Primary Device is: PCI 02:09:0
lspci will give the same information.

You will need to edit the xorg.conf and change the pci bus to the new number and also change the driver to the new card, I think cirrus is the driver for it.

once you have made the changes, as root do a startx and it should come up with gray screen. If so, alt - ctl - backspace will kill it.

You may be able to simply restart the display manager or a reboot should bring back life.

Well both steps seem pretty simple but I'm still confused. I'm pumping X out over the PVR-350's component output. Why would I list "cirrus" as the driver and change the busid to that card? Currently both are set to the PVR-350.

Thanks,

Abby

Hi,
If I knew the dark inner secrets of why, I would be probably trying the help solve the world energy issues and global warmining. At this moment I don't have my 350 driving the tv so exactly where the two points are listed I can't say.

Basicly I have found that if you can't fire off the xserver to a regular computer monitor then the frame buffer won't work either. Probably if we both were to google a little the answer is "out there" somewhere as the frame buffer seems to be simply rerouting the the video to a different hardware location. In this case the pvr-350.

There is also a universal video driver that works 99.9% called vesa however that does not seem to work with the frame buffer (fb0 or fb1).

Most fans I find that are older make noise because like a baby, they need to have a little tlc. Usually a small drop of sewing machine oil will make them hum quietly for a long time.

Mike

350 out is composite, not omponet.

Yeah yeah yeah, composite I get it.

The changes which Ryan recommended, are they in XF86Config-4.1st? If so then that really doesn't make sense. If this is all obvious then just confirm anyway.

Thanks,

Abs

Probably because your current configuration is still looking for the video card you had before.

Just because you aren't using the hardware doesn't mean it doesn't reference it on boot up. Mythtv might not be using the video card for display, but the initial linux install still found it and expects it.

Besides, are you sure linux isn't using that video card? If you were to reinstall the old one with the old settings, and hook up a monitor to it, you might find that it's displaying to the monitor too.

Hi,

I forget what version you are running... try as root
# nano /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
