I had a quick search of the forum but couldnt see anything relating to this.
Does anybody know the state of supporting softcams or a hardcam on Myth?

I have a legitimate card and would like to use it for a DVB-C card that has no cam slot, ive heard that its possible with a card reader and cam emulator.

I am pretty sure this is not in Myth at the moment, but wondered if anyone had any information on this or cams in general on KnopMyth ?

Just going to bump this thread.
I have a DVB-S card, ive got it all working in Myth

Now, if I have a legal sky card I want to use with Myth. I dont want a seperate box for each job, and dont want to pay SKY+ tax.

It should be reasonable to use a softcam and card reader to watch a paid for subscription via Myth TV yes?

My plan was to have all three cards in Myth, a DVB-S/C/T. I will only have one subscription, but the other two cards can be used for the channels that dont appear on all three formats as well as multi-tuners for the ones that do and are free, such as BBC etc.

I have gotten nowhere in regards to finding information on a softcam. I know that you can do it with a card reader, but nobody will tell me how or even where to get the software.

Can somebody help, or at least point me in the right direction?

As I understand it there is no (legal) 3rd party VideoGuard CAM for Sky, as "Uncle Rupert" needs to have full control of the Platform. As I understand it there are semi regular updates to change encryption.
It might be worthwhile looking at the alt.satellite.tv.* heirachy, alt.video.satellite.dvb-mpeg, rec.video.satellite.europe, uk.tech.broadcast and uk.tech.digital-tv newsgroups to get an answer to this question.

What cards do you have/are planning to use, BTW?
Just as a comment, Telewest do not like 3rd parties connecting equipment to their network as this could lead to network interference (you are, after all, connecting to a HF network) to yourself and 3rd parties. I would assume NTL has the same policy.
Also as I understand it, each STB has it's own address, so even if you have some kind of CAM that was compatible with TW/NTL, you still shouldn't be able to decrypt anything.

Your mostly right. I know there is a cam available for non sky boxes that now decodes sky when a legit card is inserted. Ive seen them and had them offered to me, but I dont have a CI slot on my dvb-s card :(

As for cable, your right again about the address for a box, but its possible to just cut the return path so the cable company cant see the card. That is better as your not transmitting back down the cable. I assume the cards conform to the required standards in regards to HF networks or they wouldnt sell them, what use would they be.
Id given up on the DVB-C idea anyway, its just too hard. I know SKY should be possible though.

I dont get this, I want to pay sky lots of money for a subscription but not untill they let me decide what hardware to watch it on. Im not paying for a sky+ box when I have a working Myth box.

Is it so bad that I want to watch a legal subscription on my own hardware? I wouldnt mind the sky+ and sky HD boxes if Sky didnt cripple them and charge an extra £10/£15 a month tax to make them work again.

I dont have a sub right now, I was looking for the best way to acheive what I want. It looks like a SKY HD subscription and box is the easiest way, but it costs so much. Ill take out whatever sub i need to in order to get this working.

THanks for the tip on the places to check, ill look into it more.

I'm not sure about the legality of these though.

Even if you have a fully paid up Sky+ you need to have a sub. to get the Sky+ functionality.

Oh I agree, the platform should be open, with standard CAMs available. I believe that Sky want to keep control of the whole platform for several reasons:
To eliminate the possibility of non subscriber access to their services.
To ensure they maximise revenue for additional services that can be provided for zero or marginal cost.
Associate their platform as "satellite" and prevent access to other services.

As this is getting a bit OT, it should be continued in the OT section.
