Post subject:  Saving DVD Rips

So, I was going to use Myth to make some backups of a few of the DVDs I'm having intermittent trouble playing (scratches and such).

I ripped them to the HD without issue. And I can play the ISO in MythVideo without a problem.

But...I can't burn them to a DVD. It's ~8gb, and a single layer is only ~4.7gb.

...what should I do?

I considered just using zip/rar/whatever to split the file and burning it to two DVDs, but then, to play it, I'd have to copy it to the HD, uncompress, and that's more of a hassle than just getting the scratched DVD to play.

Any other ideas?

Get a dual-layer DVD recorder?

You can get media now for under $2/ea. and the drives aren't very expensive. I got a Samsung 18x that records anything that's round, flat, and shiny. It was under $50.

I may have to look into that then.

In the interim, I put DVD Shrink on my windows machine, opened the file, replaced eps 3 & 4 with still images (it's an option), and left everything else uncompressed (works out to about 4.2gb) and then backed it up to an ISO.

Then did the same thing again, only this time replacing eps 1 & 2 with still images.

That way I retain the menus, and extra features, and everything...I just have to use two discs. No big deal.

Not sure how well that will work with 2 hour movies...but it works great for backing up DVDs of TV Series.

...well...I still have to make sure I can burn the ISOs and play them in a DVD player, but they work/play fine in VLC.

Try a http://google.com/linux search and you can find a "DVD" program that will "shrink" your DVD down with a "linux" based computer. Woof-Woof! :)
