Post subject:  Static in audio, some channels ok

I have two a777 cards, and on both cards, I am getting static on several channels, but not all. Both cards are doing the same thing on the same channels.
I originally started with one card, and did a heap of recording during the first week with no problems, but I don't recall if that's because I just happened to be recording on the channels that are ok.

Things tried:
Switching the cards around
Running only one card (ie isolating them)
Moving them down a slot
Switching the feed for each card.
Retuning.

Motherboard is ASUS A8V Deluxe, FX5700 video card.
DVD ROM, DVD RW, two hard drives, all IDE
Location is Perth, WA. I have a STB which works fine.

I did some searching earlier today, and some people report a similar problem with EMI and load issues (PSU etc), and SATA which I'm not using.
One post I read suggested disabling some USB items in the BIOS, which fixed his problem; I have yet to try it.

[edit] don't do this, it breaks.
I have since found that I had some bad transports which must have been picked up from a channels.conf import. The channels file was created with dvbscan against the Perth frequency list, so I don't know why they'd be bad.

[edit 2]
Found out that it wasn't the transports that were in error.
I selected "Enable AC3 to SPDIF Passthrough" and this is causing the problem.
The following channels are affected:
Chanel 10 (showing Grand Prix Masters)
9 (showing Free Willy 2)
ABC (showing Tennis - Hopman Cup XIX: Day 2)

Channels 7, SBS and ABC2 are fine, though I still ony get analogue.

Mixer is /dev/mixer (shoud this be changed ?)
Mixer controls are PCM or Master, doesn't seem to matter which.
I have a decoder capable of both Dolby and DTS, and I'm using an A8V mobo, on board sound (Via chipset).

[edit 3] SPDIF wasn't turned on for the passthrough to work.
