Ok - downloaded the R5F1 and just installed it accepting defaults. Here's the hardware:

P4 1.8Ghz / 512MB
Radeon 7000 AGP
SB Live
320GB IDE
DVD RW
100mb Intel NIC

Hooked up to a 27" Widescreen HD/LCD display

Couple issues:
Right now I don't have a tuner for this machine. I wanted to check this out for playback to see how usable this old hardware would be before I upgraded. This is going to be for my bedroom.

My primary HTPC is a Vista MCE machine, which has an OTA HT Tuner, and analog cable. It's on a gigabit LAN. To try things out I wanted to access a shared drive on the Vista MCE and try to playback on the MythTV box. I can't see where you can add network storage locations. (Does Myth support Samba out of the box?)

Also how do I configure Myth for widescreen display?

I know ideally I will want to upgrade at least to a higher end video card, but wanted to see if MythTV would work out as a viable alternative to my Microsoft MCE that I'm currently running on.

Myth itself is unrelated to samba - samba is handled by the underlying Linux OS. For more info on Knoppmyth & samba, look here:

Again, it's the underlying Linux (or more specifically xorg) that needs to be configured for widescreen. You'll need to edit your xorg.conf file. There's a decent overview of xorg.conf here:

I cannot give you specific instructions though...

If you upgrade your video card, I would advise an nvidia-based card. They're more Linux-friendly and there's much more support available.

FWIW: You don't have enough horsepower to do HD, but it should be fine for SD.
