Sys Specs:

Generic Case
Nice powersupply (ok, I iwll check it out later)
MSI K8N Neo (MS7030) Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
Radeon 7000 64M DDR TVO
WD 300 PATA Drive
Hauppauge WinTV PVR 250 9Detected as V4L Capture Card)

So yes I am a newbie with Linux and even more so with MythTV. I have searched the forums but either the fixes did not work or i could not find what they were talking about.

A few of the errors that were present when I did the configure are:

irexec: Could not open config files /root/.lircrc and etc/lircrc
irexec: No such file or directory

grep: /etc/htdigest: no such file or directory

then when I went and ran myfilldatabase later at the end it was saying:

Connecting to backend server 127.0.0.1:6543
Connection timed out

If I try to mange my schedule, it says that it could not connect to the backend server and to check the Ip address.

Thanks for everyone's help. I have fresh installed this about 6 times now with two different video cards so I am getting some practice.

Clayton

The PVR250 is configured as a PVR-x50 MPEG card, not v4l

For some of these see the troubleshooting pages on the wiki: http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=TroubleShooting
Especially: http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=BlackScreenWatchingTV

Also see the R5E50 Upgrade hints and hazards posting. (It's not just for upgrades any more! ;-)) This will provide the fix for the backend startup issue.

thanks tjc. I did look oer both of those links before, but did not see anything that would appear to cause the trouble.

I have just now changed out the config for the capture card and i can finally see the listings, now to get it to record....

ok, I can see the listings and even record, but there are still acouple issues left.

1. If I reboot the machine, the back end does not start autmatically. I can do an Alt 3 to start it and then an Alt M for the frontend and then this works fine.

2. I think this is more of a really stupid lazy question/issue. I can not see anything on the TV. When I first setup KnnopMyth, I did not type in TV, I just hit enter and set it up. Also I hooked the RCA jack from the PVR 250 to the TV. I believe I need to use the S-Video from the video card and change it to RCA. Correct?

Yes I am a newb at this whole video out to TV.

Forgot to add that I can use VNC to connect to the box and see everything just fine.

The upgrade hints thread linked above covers this... This fix is in about the third page of follow up postings. Other folks with slow hardware have seen a slightly different error that may be a race condition (One daemon starting before the other one is running), the usual cure for that is to force the start up for the dependant daemon to start the one it depends on then wait for a certain amount of time.

Yes. The PVR-250 doesn't have any output jacks, those are all inputs. You need to connect your TV to your video card. For a SDTV S-Video is the best choice, followed by Composite video (yellow RCA jack). This may mean using an adaptor that came with your video card. Having chosen tv at start install would have helped, but you can get essentially the same effect by using the right /etc/X11/xorg.conf file which limits it's resolutions and timings to be TV compatible.

- You need to do this as root.

- In Unix/Linux case matters, /etc/x11/xorg.conf is not the same as /etc/X11/xorg.conf so that's why it thinks it's a new file.

- Lacking better info I'm guessing that you're using KnoppMyth R5E50 which uses xorg.conf, but this is a recent change and older versions used XF86Config-4 instead.

Critical bits are (for NTSC):
Code:
        HorizSync 30 - 50
        VertRefresh 60 - 60

In the Monitor section (along with compatible Modelines), and:
Code:
        DefaultColorDepth 24

along with the corresponding:
Code:
        SubSection "Display"
                Depth     24
                Modes "640x480" "800x600"
        EndSubSection

In the Screen section.
