Post subject:  Recording Starts Early and Ends Early

Hi! For some reason, my mythtv starts recording a couple of minutes before the show should begin and goes cuts off before the show ends. I've checked to make sure that I haven't set it to start recording early in the setup and also the clock is correct.

I did some searching on Google and in the forums here but I can't find anything. Any information would be extremely helpful!! Thanks!

I find that the programs seem to be all over the place around a top or bottom of the hour as much as 3-4 minutes either way but usually within 1 minute on either side.

Unfortunately that seems to be the way the programmers can keep you glued to their shows. A couple of my regulars got so bad and irregular I finally dropped them because the schedule always said "on time"

There are a couple of places you can look or even adjust recording times.

Global Setting normal>
In the Myth Frontend Utilities/Setup>Setup>TV Settings>General(Advanced) "3rd screen" is a before start and past end setting. However they both only go "Positive" i.e starting earlier and ending later.

Global Timebase setting>
You can adjust your time sync by providing an Offset for the master clock once it takes an NTP update. I wouldn't however recommend that.

Individually per Channel/Recording Schedule>
I am not sure you could do this for each Channel as a whole, but you can adjust the recording window for each individual recording, those will go positive or negative and move the window accordingly.
That is the only method I have found to compensate for each individual programmers "Sliding windows"

I thought I had seen a global setting to "Warp" the time in the menu both positive and negative but alas I couldn't see it now...

Hope this helps.

BTW: I am using KM R5C7, YMMV

Don't forget to check that your system clock is right... KM usually sets up ntpd to try to keep it synced with a time server, but if the clock drifts far enough that'll give up.

The bad news is the bigbro is also right about the sloppyness in the program start times. The one that gives me fits is Cartoon Network which tends to drift over the course of an evening with things getting later and later or earlier and earlier. Anything I really don't want truncated gets a 5 minute bracket on the start & end times.

Personally I add about 15 mins to any of my schedules for our commercial networks. It is usually overkill for primetime but for shows on later at night you need it.

Thank you for you responses! I have made sure my clock is set properly. I didn't know that program times were that whacky. I can check next time by sticking around when the program actually starts and seeing if it's starting later than promised.
