Post subject:  FedorMyth vs KnoppMyth

What is the diff. between these two and why would I choose one over the other? Also as far as setting up and using MythTV will I see any diff. between the two?

Thanks,

Steve

I've not heard of FedorMyth, are you referring to MythDora?

Both Knoppmyth and MythDora are distributions designed specifically to aid in the setup and configuration of a system to run MythTV and Myth plugins. I have been running Knoppmyth for about 2 years and tried MythDora a few months ago to see what it was all about. I personally found Knoppmyth to be much faster and simpler to install. MythDora installs MythTV 0.20, which is what the latest Knoppmyth installs, but depending on which fixes are included you may find slight differences between the two. Knoppmyth includes some tweaks to the menus to include some needed system utilities that I don't recall seeing in MythDora.

Bottom line: I would download and try them both. It's really a matter of personal preference, you should use the one that works best for you.

Both are designed to be a single install solution for a MythTV DVR.

KnoppMyth is build on top of Debian Linux (Sid)
MythDora is build on top of FedoraCore Linux (I think 5)

Both use MythtTV .20

Knoppmyth R5E50 is a CD install
MythDora 3.2 is a DVD install

The Linux packages each come with vary somewhat (I don't know the details)
Knoppmyth I would guess has a slightly bigger community/user base as has been around longer.

If you prefer Debian or Fedora may want to stick with the one you are most comfortable with.

This site has video howtos on installing both for another overview.

That is Jarrod Wilson's guide to installing MythTV on top of Fedora. Knoppmyth or MythDora are probably the best place for you to get your feet wet with Linux and MythTV. Jarrod's guide is great and has a lot of in depth info though.

On a side note Jarrod has recently joined the MythDora team.

Was able to get Knoppmyth installed today, not without issues but it's installed and running, more or less, I'm on my way.

Just a quick question. In simple terms can you explain "frontend" and "backend" as they relate to MythTV, or point me to where it's explained. A few of the functions I click on give me, can't find backend or it's not running.

Thanks,

Steve

Normally, a single system contains both the backend (records TV) and frontend (plays back recordings). You interact with the frontend.
For flexibility, the backend can be on another machine - but a simple "Tivo Replacement" setup has both sets of software running on one box.

The backend should start automatically. But there is sometimes a problem. See TJC's upgrade notes for the fix.
But the work-arround is to press Alt+3 to re-start the backend. Wait 20 secs, and it should be ready.

Also:
alt+1 starts the backend
alt+2 stops the backend
atl+3 restarts it
alt+S is the backend setup (tuner cards, sources, channels, etc..). It's good to do alt+1 before, and alt+2 after.

You should note that the shortcut keys specified above are KnoppMyth specific.
