Let me start by saying that I have searched the forum, and am aware that there have been a number of questions lately about how to get PVR x50 files to play on a windows box. It seems that most of the suggestions involve using other programs to play the files (Media Player Classic, VLC, MPlayer, etc.) I am able to play my recordings on my XP box with no problems using Cyberlink PowerDVD (an OEM version that came with a burner) and Media Player Classic. I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to get the files to play in plain old WMP. When I try, I usually get sound - but the video freezes or stutters. Why do I care? I'm trying to use TVersity to transcode and stream my recordings to an XBOX 360. Since TVersity has WMP 11 as a requirement, and my playback results in TVersity are similar to when I try WMP 11 - I'm assuming that if I can get WMP to work, I can get TVersity to work. Any ideas? Why not transcode on your MythTV box using this info: http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php? ... iDEncoding then just use TVersity to stream? |

It is not specific to your desired functionality, but I can advise you of the following. Capture at only 720x480, and or disable closed captioning. Apparently IVTV does not correctly encapsulate the feed when grabbing 480x480 and CC. Unfortunately in my experience, WMP still can't play the mpeg2 program stream format that IVTV creates by default, but VLC can play it. You can use IVTV to change the format, some of which may work natively with WMP. But I don't know how to force MythTV to always capture in alternate streams, and whether it could play the resulting files anyway. I have used VLC to transcode original IVTV files into DIV3 video format MP3 audio format and then WMP can successfully play the movies. However the quality isn't great. If you wanted to do this, it should be easy enough to set up a user job to automatically have VLC do this transcode in the background after recording. |

Thanks for the suggestions. I had considered transcoding all my recordings as a solution - most likely going the xvid route, but wanted to see if there was some way to make it work without going through all that. I'll play with ivtv a little, just to see if I can get a file that WMP will play. My guess is that in the end, I will go the xvid route - more for the reason of saving disk space than to be able to play files on the 360. This is one of those "I want to do it 'cus I ought to be able to do it" situations. Mike |
