I picked up a 500GB external storage unit "Buffalo Linkstation Live." Is this going to work as storage for a Mythbox?

Difficult to say w/ out trying. Looks like it attaches to the network and is accessable via samba, so you'll need to mount the file system on your myth box. The problem may be performance. Many of these boxes have very low network performance -- 10 mbps or less, so you'll have to try it to see if it's fast enough for your situation.

I have a WD Netcenter 500gb that I use to store mp3s and recordings I want to keep. It will serve up HD recordings over a 10/100 connection just fine. The Buffalo should work just as well if not better. but you'll have to find out, as you don't detail your intentions or setup. as always, YMMV...

Too Many Secrets, have you measured the read and write performance of that box? Thanks!

The problem is, I don't know what m setup is going to be yet. I have been intending to make a Mythbox in the very near future. The GD fricking commercials are about to drive my wife and I out of our minds. I do want a HD box to use with my HD system. The reason I have this LinkStation to begin with is because in my haste to pick up a backup system I used Amazon's one click feature and forgot I had already put one in the cart the day before when I was comparing it to other systems for the office. Next thing I know, I've got two of them. Now if I can use it for a PVR system, I'll keep it....If not....I'll send it back.

It will be connected to a 10/100 network...Powered by an AMD 5600 X2 with
Sata2 internal HD's and whatever dual video cards you suggest. Other than that, I'm ignorant as to what other information you need.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but are you asking if you can use this Buffalo station as a MythTV frontend/backend, or simply for storage of your media? What do you plan to store on it if the latter?

Personally I would send it back and use the money to purchase what you need for your first KnoppMyth box. Then, after you have played around with that and know what/how you want to do you can add more storage. I have also found that SMB appears to have more overhead and I get better throughput with NFS.

That would make a good HDTV backend/frontend system. Not sure what you mean by "dual video cards" though.

I would suggest browsing the Tier 1 and Tier 2 forums to get an idea of what others are using, and how your existing hardware fits in...

No I haven't. It seems slow moving large files, but the thing is near silent and passively cooled. I purchased for a backup device, but integrated it into the myth system out of need and have been pleased.

I have a file server running that contains all of my music and videos. How would I mount the music so that KM will see it? Does KM handle things gracefully if the file server isn't up?
