Yea I know - use mythtv-frontend.
I would if I could but it will not coonect to the database and I really don't want all the extra functionality of the FE for this particular laptop. I really like the simplicity of the mythtv player but I'd rather not dualboot just for that.
I could share out the mythtv directory and use vlc or mplayer but I then I'll have to figure what program is what since they are are named with the channel and date instead of the program name.
Thanks!

[quote="ej4176"]Yea I know - use mythtv-frontend.[quote]
Or use mythviewer:
http://www.visi.com/~grante/mythviewer/
There's a version with some enhancements to the UI code out
there somewhere, but I had problems merging the patches and
have subsequently lost track of them. :/
Anyway, the version above is what I use pretty regularly to
watch MythTV recording in a window on my desktop while I do
other stuff.

/myth/pretty holds the "pretty" names (titles) of your recordings...

grante - I suspect I'll run into the same problem I have with running the FE - cant connect to the DB. I did see the links at the bottom of your page and will see if I can sort it out.
I'm not using knoppmyth. I'm using Ubuntu 7.04 with the package that is in the repos. I come to this forum instread of the ubuntuforums because I usually find answers to my questions w/o posting and this is the best mythtv forum I have come across.

There's no 'e' at the end, and it's common to capitalize the initial letter of a persons name. The fact that my username has an e at the end is an accident of history: it was required by a coporate IT policy once upon a time, and I find it easier to just use the same username everywhere. That doesn't mean I want to be addressed as "grante". Not that I think there's anything special about me or my name. I find it just as annoying when others are addressed by their usernames. Addressing poeple by their username just seems so... I don't know... junior-high chatroomesque. </pet_peeve> Quote: I'm not using knoppmyth. I don't think there's anything Knoppmyth specific about how one
enables remote DB access, so the pages I linked to should be
applicable.

Didn't mean to offend you. By putting the username in the reply it denotes that part of my reply is to that users response. If I had added slowtolearns username in my post you would see that part of my response was directed to his question of what version of knoppmyth I was running and /myth/pretty.
Anyway - I have corrected my db connection issues so that both the FE and mythviewer work.

I just prefer to be called by my real name, and I think it's silly for people to hide behind usernames. But, that seems to be how things are done in "forums" on the web, so I'll just have to live with it. It's just that it sounds so much like a bad CB-radio movie... Glad to hear it. If you have any problems with mythviewer, let
me know.

Don't mean to butt in, but you can't actually see most people's real names...
I realise you have Grant in your signature, but if you hit reply and scroll down the post's you'll see signatures aren't displayed.

Quit using grante as you username if you don't' want to be called that. My name isn't esherm22 but I don't care if I am addressed that way. I even have a friend that says "Hey esherm22". It's kind of like a nickname.
So you don't have a nickname or have never called anyone by a nickname? If not...I don't believe it.

And that's another. Most web forums (including phpBB2) have really awful UIs.

esherm22 wrote: Quit using grante as you username if you don't' want to be called that. A username is how one identifies oneself to the computer. I see no reason it should even be displayed to other users. That's one of the reasons I dislike web forums so much: we're governed by what the forum's programmer thinks we should do and how we should do it rather than by out own preferences. You're stuck with one (generally awful) UI design that's crippled by what a web browser can do. Quote: My name isn't esherm22 but I don't care if I am addressed that way. I'm just saddened by the reduction in civility that seems the norm in web based "forums". Quote: So you don't have a nickname or have never called anyone by a nickname? If not...I don't believe it.
Sure I've had nicknames. Some of them I didn't mind, and some
of them I disliked. They were generally only used by people I
knew.
I aplogize for bringing it up. I shouldn't have said anything.
I'm not going to be able to improve the level of discourse in
web forums by complaining, so I'm just wasting my and other's
time.
