I want to save some hd recordings so they won't get deleted that I may wach later. I as thinking of moving the mpg files from the tv directory to my windows computer. Then move them back when I want to watch them. Is that a good idea or is there a better one? Will this work correctly? rkshack |

This probably won't give you the outcome you are looking for. While the recording itself is in /myth/tv all the information about the recording (episode name, synopsis, etc) is in the mythtv database. Consider the following scenario: 1. You copy the file to your windows box. 2. Myth decides to delete it. It is now gone from /myth/tv and the database 3. You copy the recording back to /myth/tv. This restores the file, but not the database info. When you go into the list of recorded programs, it won't show up because there aren't any database entries. THere is a script that can be used to create new database entries -- I don't recall the name of it -- perhaps someone else can help with that. With that script you can restore enough of the database entries to play it from the myth front end. Marc |

When I had recordings made when the hd signal was out a 0 byte recording would be made. In these situations the entry in the database would stay there until I deleted the show manually. This is what i thought would happen. If what I suggested is not a good idea what are the alternatives. |

The suggestion I was making was to also use the script that enables you to restore the database entries. I'm sure others can suggest other ideas. Marc |

One of the utilities has an "export" option which will dump the DB information needed to reimport the recording later, but I always forget which one it is... Looks like it's nuvexport... which has an option to "Export to .nuv and .sql" in it's menus. |

Hi, I think I am missing something here. You have R5F27 on which you have recorded some hd content? If so can not you go into the view recording and right arrow on the show where there is an option not to auto delete? Or were these previous recordings to an upgrade? Thanks Mike |

I just copy the files to another computer with Mythweb, watch 'em with Xine, and put up with no database info.... |

Storage is my issue. I don't want the show to roll off but I also don't want it to sit there taking up space when I don't plan on watching it for a while. |

Hi, Well, at least we have where things are going and why. There is a method of doing a copy via /myth/pretty so that way the show will retain the name. I don't recall the proper switches and wasn't able find it quickly with a search however it was quite simple. similar to cp -a /myth/pretty/A-Pretty-Show-Name and Send-It-To-A-Destination (this will only give the ~49byte link) I would copy some show into the video folder then delete the /myth/tv file then normal menu way. You could do that to an external usb drive (wd book world?) The switch tells it to follow the link and you end up with the Pretty Name with the show. I usually don't care about the database once I have the show named. it may have been cp -aLv . If I find the post again, I will share it. MIke try this http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... 2b97b52f18 |

How about create an .iso of the shows you want. Then copy the .iso elsewhere or burn the show onto a dvd? that way you've a got the meta data and the show in one tidy place. |

Will this work correctly? Since you're tryihg to save storage space, the easiest thing to do would be to move the file elsewhere else and replace it with a shorter file of the same name. A little video clip that says "program moved to offline storage" would be cute. If you simply move the file (and don't replace it), I think you just get an error message when you try to play it. IIRC, you'll be unable to "delete" the show if the file can't be found. However, if you run any of the "cleanup" scripts, the database entry will probably get deleted if the file isn't there. Then when you want to watch the show, just move it back. |

I don't mind getting the error when the file is absent. I think that if the show is not there the shows will stay in the database. But I could be wrong. I haved moved some shows and will let you know what happens. If I don't ever delete the show from the database then I won't need to update the database. That is my theory which grante seems to confirm somewhat. I will see what happens. If I need to can I view a hidef mpg file throught the video player? Rkshack |
